Gender and Sexuality (LGBTQ+Collection)

Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections began collecting Gay and Lesbian material in the 1970s thanks to the work of bibliographer Anne E. Tracy. Since then, the collection has evolved to collect the individual voices of the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ collection currently holds material that ranges from archival records, ephemera, printed art, periodicals, popular literature, recorded music, and zines. Early primary materials from the Gay Liberation Movement include ephemera, literature, and periodicals. A primary focus of the collection is to document local and regional movements, organizations, as well as the individual voices of members of the Michigan LGBTQ+ community. New material is added to the collection by purchase or donation, with priorities in activism, archival collections, art and photography, comic art, popular fiction, serials, and zines.
