Civil War Research Database -- "This database focuses on creating information on Civil War soldiers. Its primary source of information are the state rosters that were published by the Adjutants General for each state involved in the War. These rosters include the military records for each member of that state's military forces. In addition, it has information from the Official Records, pension index records, 1860 census records, GAR records, Roll of Honor records, Medal of Honor records, and Regimental histories. Also, the database will soon include images of battle maps that accompany the Official Records." Be sure to follow the instructions in "How To Access The Civil War Research Database."

American Periodical Series -- A compilation of American periodicals and journals from colonial times to 1900. It is available in the following formats:


Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective -- "This database contains the full text of major articles gleaned from over 2,500 issues of The New York Herald, The Charleston Mercury and the Richmond Enquirer, published between November 1, 1860 and April 15, 1865. The text begins with the events preceding the outbreak of war at Fort Sumter, continues through the surrender at Appomattox, and concludes with the assassination and funeral of Abraham Lincoln. Included are descriptive news articles, eye-witness accounts and official reports of battles and events, editorials, advertisements and biographies. A great effort has been made also to include articles which describe other than military concerns of the day. These include such topics as travel, arts and leisure, geographical descriptions, sports and sporting, social events,etc.
