News Sources
Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe -- Coverage begins in the 1970s. Comprises of stories from national, regional, and international newspapers, magazines, and broadcasters. Searching software is somewhat clunky.
ProQuest Research Library -- Coverage begins in the early 1980s. Contains articles from a wide number of popular and scholarly publications in a variety of fields. Some but not all articles are full text.. Try using the "Guided" search method which is quite powerful and fairly easy to use.
WilsonSelectPlus -- Coverage begins in 1994. Provides full text articles in science, humanities, education and business. It has articles from only 400 publications compared with the 1,000+ publications of Lexis-Nexis and ProQuest. Coverage begins with 1994. Recommend using the "Advanced" searching option.
Newspaper Abstracts -- Indexes and abstracts more than 25 U.S. and regional newspaper, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and USA Today. Note: There is no full text from this database; it contains just the citations. You have to go either to the microfilm edition of the newspaper (kept in Major Newspapers Section of the Microforms Library (2nd Floor, West Wing)) or check the other full text databases. We subscribe to this resource since its search software is better than Lexis-Nexis.
Newspaper Index Sources on the Internet -- Links to U.S. And non-U.S. newspaper indexes and archives on the Web. List maintained by the Library of Congress.
New York Times -- considered the U.S.' "newspaper of record" since its inception. The MSU Library has a full run on microfilm from 1851 to the present. We keep the printed version until the microfilm arrives. The film is located in the first section of microfilm shelves in the Microforms Library (2nd Floor, West Wing).
