Golf Course Management Magazine is now completely digitized
GCSAA members now have access to the entire
archive of Golf Course Management
Magazine and its predecessor publications dating back to 1933 through
an agreement with GCSAA and Michigan State
University's Turfgrass Information Center (TIC). Through this online
digitized archive, which can be accessed on the GCSAA Web site at http://www.gcsaa.org/GCM/Archive.aspx,
members can browse year-by-year or they can do a search by term to
retrieve the PDF files from 1933. In addition, all TIC subscribers
will have access to the archive through TGIF.
In the past, GCSAA readers could search the GCM archive on the
GCSAA Web site, which only went back to 1996, or subscribers to the TIC's
Turfgrass Information
File could search for GCM articles from the
past, but would only see which issue the article appeared in, and then would
have to physically find the article themselves.
Clifford Haka, director of Michigan State
University Libraries, said the
new archive changes all that, as now after a search GCSAA members can see
a PDF of the article they are looking for. "The digitization makes a much
more usable tool for any of our subscribers. It takes out the step of having
to go and physically find a particular issue of GCM, assuming they
even had access to that issue," he said.
The addition of the full content of GCM into the TIC was the result
of cooperation and dedication of TIC and MSU staff and students, and involved
more than 70,000 pages of material, 700 issues of the magazine, manually
splitting nearly 30,000 PDFs, harvesting the citations for more than 10,400
turfgrass-related citations and linking more than 9,700 citations to the
PDFs.
"GCM is an outstanding addition to the full-text offerings within
TGIF, providing useful and relevant information for superintendents, researchers,
students and others in the turfgrass industry," Haka said of the addition
of GCM to the TGIF.
As part of the ongoing cooperative project of GCSAA and the Michigan
State University Libraries, as new GCMs are produced, materials will be
scanned and made available one month following the date of publication.
Golf Course Management -- or GCM -- is the monthly publication
of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, and is consistently
rated as the No. 1 publication in the golf course maintenance industry. The
magazine is dedicated to advancing the golf course superintendent profession
and helping GCSAA members achieve career success and the success of their
golf facility. The magazine provides authoritative "how-to," career-oriented,
technical and trend information from industry experts, researchers and golf
course superintendents.
GCSAA is a leading golf organization and has as its focus golf course management.
Since 1926, GCSAA has been the top professional association for the men and
women who manage golf courses in the United States and worldwide. From its
headquarters in Lawrence, Kan., the association provides education, information
and representation to more than 21,000 members in more than 72 countries.
GCSAA’s mission is to serve its members, advance their profession and
enhance the enjoyment, growth and vitality of the game of golf. The association's
philanthropic organization, The Environmental
Institute for Golf, works to strengthen the compatibility of golf with
the natural environment through research grants, support for education programs
and outreach efforts. Visit GCSAA at www.gcsaa.org.

Best Approach Publications Donates Scorecards and Yardage Guides
Best Approach Publications, founded by Gary
Mannies and Mike Howell, is
a company based out of Arizona that specializes in golf course-related publications. The
company’s services include yardage guide and scorecard printing, pinsheets,
course measurement and marking and animated flyovers. Since March 2006,
Best Approach has donated 418 yardage guides from 297 golf facilities in
16 countries to TIC’s growing yardage guide and scorecard collection. Additionally,
they have supplemented the collection with an employee guide, a player’s
journal, a yardage marker and two caddie books. The breadth of these
donations has enhanced both the quality and content of TIC’s yardage
guide collection, an endeavor that began in early 2006. By collecting
these yardage guides, we are able to document the often-changing architecture
of represented golf courses at a given point of time. This new collection
currently holds scorecards and yardage guides from over 550 facilities around
the world. Special thanks to Gary Mannies and Nancy Spraggins of Best
Approach Publications for their consistent, quality donations to this collection.

TGIF EndNote Filter Updated
EndNote is a bibliography management program that works with MS Word to
create manuscripts with the in-text citations and bibliography. The
filter for TGIF for importing references into EndNote has been updated.
The filter can be found at: http://tic.msu.edu/TGIF.enf.
EndNote staff modified the output style for Crop Science in April
2004. It appears to match the Publications
Handbook and Style Manual requirements
for in-text citations and the bibliography. If you have any questions
or difficulty using EndNote, please contact TIC at tgif@msu.edu

Architects of Distinction Prior to ASGCA debuts with Thomas Bendelow (1868-1936)
TIC is pleased to announce that Thomas Bendelow is the first entry in
the Architects of Distinction Prior to ASGCA, a new online resource which
parallels the ASGCA Architect's
Gallery. The Architects of Distinction Prior to ASGCA will
profile notable golf course architects whose body of work pre-dates the founding
of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1946. Thomas (Tom)
Bendelow (1868-1936) was perhaps the most prolific golf course designer during
the earliest era of American golf course growth. Please see: http://golfarchitects.lib.msu.edu/pre-ASGCA/bendelowt/ to
view a list of golf courses designed by Tom Bendelow either alphabetically,
by location, or by year of design. In addition, a "Philosophy of
Design" statement abridged and reprinted from the book Thomas "Tom" Bendelow:
The Johnny Appleseed of American Golf by Stuart Bendelow (Williams & Company,
Publishers. Savannah, Georgia, 2006) is featured in the entry along with a
link to Turfgrass Information File
(TGIF) content by or about Tom Bendelow. Special thanks is extended
to Stuart Bendelow, Tom's grandson, who compiled and made available the data
for this entry. This strong entry sets the stage for other groups and
individuals in the future to cooperate in the production of additional early
golf architect entries. Please contact
TIC to discuss other possibilities!

We will need your help!
TIC has begun a systematic process to attempt to ‘complete’ the
holdings of both the O.J. Noer and James
B Beard Collections. In the past we have
identified some materials that we needed to acquire for the Noer Collection,
and have made some of those needs known via our website, at: http://tic.msu.edu/needs.html --
but now we will be expanding & updating those listings, as well
as detailing the Beard Collection needs for the first time. So
if we think you might have some specific items which we’re looking
for, we may approach you to help us out! Thank you in advance
for any assistance you can provide -- watch for more information to
follow on this.

New Look for TGIF Records in Full Display
TGIF records now have a new look when displayed in full format. Each
record is set off by a band of color which contains the record number.
The finding aids section is off set by a band of a different color
which includes the words: Choices for finding the above item:.
Items might be in the form of book, article, or an electronic resource
such as a webpage, PDF, audio file, or video file. There might be a
link to WorldCat (the world's
largest network of library content and services) to find the closest
copy of a book.
In addition, DOIs are being added to the records. What is a DOI? It
stands for Digital Object Identifier which is the name for an entity
on a network such as an electronic article. The DOI remains constant
once it has been assigned regardless of change of ownership and provides
a persistent link to the item.
To see what the new format looks like and what a DOI link is (Restrictions
may apply- access depends on your institution's subscriptions), click
this fastlink: http://www.lib.msu.edu/cgi-bin/flink.pl?recno=124641 for
an example.

Google project may digitize MSU's
turf Collections
Michigan State University is
one of 12 Midwest universities that are part of a new agreement with
computer search engine giant Google to digitize the most distinctive
collections of the universities’ libraries. As part of the Google Book Search project, the agreement could result in the digitization of as many as 10 million volumes. The agreement between Google and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) will help preserve and stabilize the libraries’ legacy collections, as
well as provide broader and more in-depth access to historically significant print resources.
The five unique collections from MSU Libraries that
could be considered for inclusion in the project are: agriculture, Africana,
Candiana, Russel B. Nye Popular Culture Collection, and turfgrass. Google will
make the final decision on what to include.
Details of Turfgrass Collection
Through its collections of early and current publications, and its
development of the online Turfgrass Information File database, the Turfgrass
Information Center of the
MSU Libraries is the world's leading research collection for the study of turfgrass.
Turfgrass is a ubiquitous crop supporting a $50 billion per year business in
the United States - from golf courses and stadiums to suburban lawns, highway
margin ground cover and industrial park landscaping. The MSU Libraries began
methodical collecting in this area in the 1960s and has benefited
from the donation of the personal collections of key turf agronomists such as
O. J. Noer and James B Beard. Materials date back as far as 1790 with expanded
holdings in materials published since 1895 and continuing through the present
day. The collection includes more than 3,000 bound volumes of serials, representing
more than 300 serial titles and some 1,400 monographs. Three quarters of the
cataloged titles are unique within the holdings of the combined CIC libraries.

Now in Place: ITS Journal and Proceedings Archive
The International Turfgrass
Society’s (ITS) Journal and Proceedings can now
be accessed through the Turfgrass Information File (TGIF), thanks
to the agreement between the organization and the Turfgrass Information
Center! The Journal and Proceedings have been produced
every 4 years, following the International Turfgrass Research Conferences
since 1969. Articles more than two years old having all named author’s
copyright permission (form available at http://tic.msu.edu/itspermission.html)
are available in full-text form through Adobe Reader 4.0 (or a later
version). These archived issues can be easily located through the
Turfgrass Information File’s “Browse Full-Text Journals
(Logs Out)” option. From there, select International Turfgrass
Society Research Journal and Proceedings from the list of available
electronic journals. The journal can also be accessed through ITS’s
website (http://www.uoguelph.ca/GTI/itsweb/)
by members of ITS.
"The International Turfgrass Society(ITS) is a not-for-profit
scientific organization established in 1969 to encourage research and
education in turfgrass science, and to promote personal communication
among the international community of turfgrass researchers by organizing
international conferences to present turfgrass research and information
on all phases of turfgrass production and use.
To this end, International Turfgrass Research Conferences (ITRC) are
held at 4-year intervals. The hosts for past conferences have been
England (1969), the United States (1973, 1993), Germany (1977), Canada
(1981, 2001),
France (1985), Japan (1989), Australia (1997), and Wales (2005).
The next ITRC will be held in Chile in 2009. A refereed Journal of
turfgrass research papers is published in conjunction with each conference."
Access to ITS’s Journal and Proceedings collection
should be of great use to many TGIF subscribers!
