TGIF Record Key & Samples

Listed below are the headings (i.e. field) used in TGIF record displays, and a description of the information under each heading. Note: Depending on which display format you choose, not all of these headings may appear in your search results, and not all TGIF records contain all of these elements.

Record Key
Item "x of yy"	In a search that returns "yy" records, item "x of yy" refers to the sequence in which the records from the search are arranged. For example "item 11 of 17" would be the eleventh item in a sequence of 17 records found in that search.
Mark?	Checking the "Mark" box next to each record you want to display, will ensure that a new report that contains only your "Marked" records can be generated.
Record	The TGIF database number for this "work" (i.e. item). This number does not change and can be used like a "part #."
Authors	The author's name(s) as appear(s) on the work.
Author Affiliation	The author's employer(s) or affiliation(s) as published with the work (at the time the article was written).
Title	The title of the work as published in a journal, periodical, book, etc.
Translated Title	The English title if the actual title is in a language other than English
Meeting Info.	If presented at a conference; the conference details.
Section	Sectional headings within the publication under which this article appeared.
Source	The title of the book or the title of the journal in which the article appears. Details volume, issue, date of publication, and pages, as appropriate.
# of Pages	The exact number of pages in the item.
Pub. Info.	The place of publication and publisher.
Call No.	The Library of Congress (LC) classification location for this item in the MSU Libraries. If "TIC Vertical" is noted, the item is in our files at TIC. If no Call No. is listed, we probably do not hold this item at MSU.
Web URL (as of...)	The specific World Wide Web Universal Resource Locator (URL) for this work as of the month/year listed. We verify these every month. May also indicate if the document is within a limited access website or requires additional software. Many scientific journals require institutional or individual subscriptions to access material online.
Keywords	The index terms (descriptors) assigned to describe concisely what the article is about. All terms appearing here are usually listed in the Turfgrass Thesaurus.
Facilities	Specific facilities discussed in the work.
Cultivars	Cultivars discussed in the work.
Abstract	Here should be a concise overview of what the document is about. If a report of original research, a summary review of purpose, methodology, results, and conclusions is normally present. May instead be a "Contents Statement," which would identify descriptively what is present in the work. Not all TGIF records have abstracts.
Text	Whatever is listed under "text" includes the full printed text of an article in ASCII format. This would not include any graphs, tables, etc. The cooperation of the publishers in making this information available in this way is acknowledged.
Subjects' names	A person's name, if the person is a subject.
Business names	The name of a business, if the business is a subject.
Language	Indicates the language of the published text.
# of References	Indicates the number of citations listed at the end of the article ("literature cited"). A good way to identify additional sources.
Note	"This article appears as abstract only" - Indicates that the original cited work itself contains only an abstract. No further information would be available from the original unless the abstract or notes field indicates something else is also present.
Note	"Credit": - Indicates the source we cite is not the original location of publication.
Note	"Reprint: ..." - Indicates the article has been republished in the indicated location also.
Note	"Tables" or "Figures" or "Pictures: color, b/w" or "Graphs" or "Maps" etc. - Details material which is present as a part of the work.
See also	"See also R=xxxx" - Links this record to another TGIF R=xxxx which may be another article in the same series, an article which discusses a similar topic by the same author, a correction or update, a newer version or edition, a letter-to-the-editor about article, etc.
Note	"Brief summary appears in ...": - Indicates the location of an abstract or summation of the original work.
Evaluative Review	Details the location of evaluative/critical review(s) of this work in other places.

The GMD Field in TGIF

In Power Search, searching the GMD field ("General Material Descriptor") provides the ability to quickly isolate a group of records based on what "type" of items they are. The field is searched as for example:
GMD=DISSERTATION.

The above search would isolate all records which are actual Ph.D. dissertations. Note that this would not normally include journal articles "spun-off" from dissertation research, but only the dissertation itself, (unless the article in its entirety (="the work") had been incorporated into the dissertation exactly as published.). Below is a list of commonly used material types and the "correct" GMD value to use when searching in TGIF.
