Welcome to MSU Libraries Technical Services. Technical Services has many important responsibilities and deadlines that must be met. Our work is done with the help of numerous students, that we rely on to assist with getting the work done. Student employees are hired to come to work when scheduled and work diligently when here.
1. Each student and their immediate supervisor will agree on a written schedule for each semester. The schedule will have the following provisions:
a. 10 or more hours a week.
b. Monday thru Friday, 8:00-5:00.
c. Hours worked should be in minimum of 2 hour blocks of time. When the work schedule is established it is the student employee's responsibility to follow the schedule and come to work. Permanent changes in a student's schedule may be made, if agreed upon by the immediate supervisor.2. The week preceding finals week, each student will turn in a written schedule to their immediate supervisor for a minimum of 5 hours work for the week of finals. Working during finals week is required.
3. Student employees will work the hours stated in their schedules. Occasional alterations in schedules may take place, but the immediate supervisor must approve the change. Any working hours missed shall be discussed by the supervisor and student as to whether or not they are to be made up.
4. Following is a list of regulations concerning student employee attendance:
a. Phone immediate supervisor if arriving to work ½ hour late or more.
b. Phone immediate supervisor if ill and unable to come to work. If ill for more than one work shift, phone each day if unable to come to work.5. Absences without notification to the supervisor will not be permitted. If a student does not come to work or call to notify the supervisor of inability to come in, on 2 occasions, the student's employment may be terminated.
6. Each student employee is expected to work their scheduled hours. Excessive absenteeism may result in disciplinary action, including possible employment termination.
7. Students working a shift of a least 4 consecutive hours are entitled to a 15 minute break away from the work area. The immediate supervisor or another staff member should be notified when a break is taken. Work breaks are to occur at the mid-point of the work shift.
8. Students working a shift of more than 5 hours are required to take a lunch break. You must sign out on your time card for this lunch break and sign back in on your return. Minimum time for a lunch break is one half hour.
9. Student assistants are not permitted to use University equipment in the workplace for personal purposes. Students should not read their e-mail or surf the net at any time on team computers. If a student works enough hours to get a break, then any break time computer usage should take place at the computers available for public use in the Library, not the equipment in Technical Services.
10. Students are not permitted use of office telephones for personal calls. Personal cell phones should be turned off and put away and no calls made or received during work hours. For emergency calls, first get approval of a supervisor (or staff member, if supervisor is unavailable). Students should not receive phone calls at work except in emergency situations. Do not give the work phone number to businesses, Dr.'s to contact you here.
11. Student employees are expected to work to their fullest capabilities.
a. Concentration on the task at hand is required.
b. Use of small "earbuds" to listen to music is acceptable as long as the music is not audible to others sitting near you. Use of radios and/or headphones will not be allowed.
c. Non-work conversations with team members or other student employees should be minimal.
d. Visitors are not allowed in the workplace.
e. Snacks & beverages may be consumed. Extra caution should be taken to not spill snacks or beverages on computers, typewriters, or books. Lunches are not to be eaten in the team area.
f. Work assignments may require a student to leave the team area. When this is necessary, the student must tell their immediate supervisor where they are going and why. If immediate supervisor is not available, another team member should be informed.
