Cataloging - Format-Specific Cataloging: Planning Reports

Page Editor: Janet Baldwin
Last Updated: July 21, 2008

1. As of May 2008, planning reports have moved to the Main Library due to the closing of the Planning and Design Library.

2. Planning Reports are assigned geographical call numbers. The call number will include a larger political entity (in all caps) and one or more smaller political entities (upper and lower case).

For example: 099  MICHIGAN  Grand Rapids
                        099  CANADA   Ontario  Toronto
099  MICHIGAN  Adams Township (Hillsdale County)

(county included because there are several Adams Townships in Michigan)
                        099  MICHIGAN  Ada Township

3. A summary note may be included if necessary.

4. Construct subject headings and other fields as usual. Many planning reports are for townships (usually in Michigan). When there is more than one township of that name in the state, you must include the county in the heading.
    650   0  Land use |z Michigan |z Adams (Hillsdale County : Township) |x Planning.
651   0  Adams (Hillsdale County, Mich. : Township) |x Economic conditions.
but
    650   0  Land use |z Michigan |z Ada (Township) |x Planning.
    651   0  Ada (Mich. : Township) |x Economic conditions.

Two places to find township information:
- http://factfinder.census.gov, in the data sets with geographic comparison tables
- http://geonames.usgs.gov/  (the Board of Geographic Names website)

5. When writing the call number, do not use the inside front cover, even when the piece has a cover title. Move the stamp and call number one page further in.
