Staff Awards 2021

Liaison Librarians
Outstanding Achievement

For their work during the pandemic, we recognize the Libraries’ Liaison Librarians for a 2021 Outstanding Achievement Award: this includes all liaison librarians and not only collections librarians, as not all liaison librarians report through Collections. The pandemic necessitated a wholesale pivot to online and remote learning for all academic departments at MSU. Faculty and academic staff had to quickly adjust instruction and research plans. Thanks to the liaison librarians’ existing strong departmental connections and outreach, faculty & academic staff knew exactly who to contact for help. Liaison librarians went above and beyond their normal collections and instruction work, helping to locate digital versions of course readings, purchase new materials, and triage complex questions about library & course materials and teaching online. This was accomplished while librarians also adjusted to remote work and fulfilled regular duties.

Liaison librarians leveraged their expertise and strong departmental networks as remote learning continued for the Fall 2020 & Spring 2021 semesters. This led to increases in email reference questions, course material questions including requests for purchase of new materials, and requests for recorded tutorials and online instruction. To support these classes online required a different pedagogical approach, and required liaison librarians to completely rethink their work or develop resources like online tutorials from scratch.

This work fulfilled MSU Libraries’ Strategic Plan Core Values of user engagement, partnership and expertise in action; and advanced Strategic Directions identified by the MSUL Strategic Plan, including student development & support, and cultivating a center of activity and engagement. Liaison librarians’ outstanding efforts during the pandemic immeasurably supported MSU students and faculty, helping them to engage in remote and online learning and allowed the Libraries to succeed in providing continuous access to library materials, resources, and expertise.
