Controlled Digital Lending
Special Projects

Many MSU students rely on Course Reserves to cut costs on textbooks, so it was a high priority to figure out a way to give them online access to these books when the pandemic hit. Due to the efforts of many units and individuals, we were able to establish Controlled Digital Lending.

This project demonstrated our core value of User Engagement. Students’ needs changed (needed online access to print Reserves), and we prioritized this need and responded quickly. This project also highlighted our strategic direction of Student Development & Support. The Affordable Textbook Project is available through Course Reserves, so in order to continue offering this free-to-students course content, we had to do something.

Setting up this special project required a lot of coordinated efforts. Library IT staff set up SharePoint and the Reserves email account. Dao modified the Get it! Button to make requests possible in the online catalog. Kevin Finkenbinder and the Web Services team created the webform needed for requests. Heidi Schroeder and Susan Kendall offered guidance on accessibility needs and copyright issues. Shannon Cunningham worked with liaisons and faculty informing them of our new procedures.

Running the project continues to require coordinated staff efforts. Shannon Cunningham determines prioritization of texts for scanning. MakeCentral staff scans all CDL material and provides some accessibility remediation. Shannon then adds the file to SharePoint. Circulation staff monitor the CDL requests, check the items out in SharePoint and Sierra, and email the file to the patron. Heidi Schroeder ensures patrons with accessibility needs receive an accessible document.
We are very proud of this project, as it is helping lots of patrons with their studies and research.
