Staff Awards 2020

Breezy Silver
Staff Recognition

Breezy has developed a unique expertise in the licensing of business databases and datasets and has become a pivotal person to both the library’s and the business college’s operations as a result. These licenses are often not crafted with an academic audience in mind and require careful review and a great deal of negotiation to allow for scholarly access and use. She knows the pitfalls to look out for and advocates for the best possible outcomes for all involved. This work often involves indelicate conversations on complex matters requiring technical expertise and legal acumen, and usually require numerous conversations with both vendors and faculty alike. Breezy navigates these conversations with skill and discusses possible resolutions and outcomes to stakeholders throughout the process. She is sought out for her knowledge and the business college now requires Breezy’s review of all licenses before they will formally sign them. She has also brought her experience to bear in her role as the coordinator for the data collections fund. Breezy has further developed an acumen for negotiating price, and has saved the university and college thousands of dollars through her efforts. It should be noted that she is also recognized and respected by colleagues at other business libraries across the country for her work in negotiating with vendors. In fact, she was asked to join an Ebsco advisory board of business librarians based on the recom-mendation of a colleague at UCLA. This is a significant accomplishment for any business librarian and a selection that is worthy of further recognition. She has published articles about dataset and database licensing, and has continued to build her national reputation in this area. In fact, her article in Ticker, “Help! I’m New to Licensing and Don’t Know Where to Start” , is one of the journal’s most read articles https://quod.lib.umich.edu/t/ticker/16481003.0004.104?view=text;rgn=main She also has been invited to conduct extensive reviews for high profile publications such as ACRL/Choice’s Resources for College Libraries (Economics), Charleston/ Choice (CC) Advisor and to serve as an advisor to vendors developing new products.
