The MSU Libraries provide access to the Internet and the World Wide Web in certain service areas, to support activities relevant to the mission of the Libraries. These activities include consulting the Libraries on-line public access catalog, various licensed databases, and Web pages from sites on- and off-campus.
A limited number of Internet and Web workstations are available to serve many users, and these are intended for reference use. At peak periods, the needs of users engaged in reference activities take precedence, and all users may be limited to thirty minute sessions if others are waiting to use the equipment. PCs in reference service areas of the Libraries may not support or provide access to word processing, email, and other software applications that fall outside the reference process.
Anyone may use "Selected Resources" workstations in the MSU Libraries to reach library digital resources, including government depository materials and most licensed online databases. A validated Pilot account and affiliation with MSU are necessary for access to university computing resources, the campus network, and Web sites beyond library resources.
The MSU Libraries have no control over most information available on the Internet and are not responsible for content. Internet and Web sites may contain controversial or offensive material. Patrons use the Internet at their own discretion; parents and guardians of minors are responsible for monitoring the library activities of their children. Library staff cannot monitor the flow of information over the Internet.
In certain situations, online activities of Internet users may distract or offend others using the library. Examples include sites that display particular images, or produce sounds or noises. It is the responsibility of those users who have been disturbed to seek the assistance of library staff in finding an accommodation.
Wherever possible, the Libraries will use available technology and devices to remedy the situation. Examples include workstations equipped with headphones, or laptops borrowed from Circulation. To the extent allowed by space and floor plan, workstations will be situated in such a way as to provide maximum privacy for all users.
