Collection Division Goals and Objectives 2006-2007
I. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Goal: Provide a collection of information resources that will support
the identifiable research needs of the university community as well as those
of scholars worldwide.
- Select new and retrospective research materials needed by faculty and students.
- Respond to university curriculum initiatives:
- Monitor major program changes in Colleges and Departments.
- Monitor library impact of graduate degree proposals in the University
Committee on Curriculum.
- Address collection implications for the expansion of the College of Human
Medicine in Grand Rapids.
- Pursue a unified approach to collecting electronic materials:
- Establish principles, criteria and policies for selection of these materials
generally.
II. SERVICE TO USERS
Goal: Provide instructional services and personal assistance to aid
library users in identifying, locating, and using resources.
- Provide public service through reference, appointment, and/or scheduled
office hours outside the library
- Strengthen liaison contacts with Colleges and Departments:
- Educate faculty about print-to-digital issues including space savings,
licensing,
copyright, costs, and alert services.
- Participate in Angel implementation and VU course development.
- Write jointly (AD and selector) to new faculty hires in August, provide
survey of serial needs for report to Director of Libraries, follow-up with
on-campus contact.
- Identify librarians offering library instruction to each university program.
- Develop liaison to the new residential humanities college.
- Provide users with Web-based Research Guides:
- Review existing guides for accuracy and relevance, update them using
LibDates, date and sign them; remove outdated guides.
- Create new research guides where called for.
- Assist in implementing new Innovative Interfaces software that improves
access to full text:
- WebBridge for OpenURL.
- MetaFind for federated searching.
III. COLLECTION MAINTENANCE
Goal: Organize, maintain, control, preserve and secure the collection
for maximum utilization.
- Post accurate complete collection management procedures online:
- Revise and enhance Collections Division web page(s), with a more
prominent location on the library site.
- Include procedures for preservation review of gifts, collection renewal/reformatting,
lost/paid items, grey literature and PDFs.
- Explore use of software to manage/evaluate databases including usage statistics,
ERM, SerialsSolutions, III's Electronic Resources Management software, and
OCLC WCA.
- Integrate collections transferred from branches into Main.
- Work with conservation and preservation staff to:
- Identify areas within the collection with greatest need for protection..
- Consider "medium rare" storage of some fragile or rare books.
- Make best possible use of stack space:
- Review duplicates in the collection.
- Review online versions of journals for opportunities to withdraw print
volumes.
- Review CRL holdings to identify gaps we could fill in by donations.
- Develop procedures to preserve electronic resources:
- Write a statement of principles for selection of electronic materials.
- Pursue
permanent access and third-party archiving in licenses for
electronic subscriptions.
- Consider participation in CIC archiving projects, LOCKSS and Portico.
- Determine options for local preservation of MSU-based electronic publications
(with Archives).
- Increase the share of our holdings that have good OPAC records:
- Emphasize the OPAC by migrating functions from
ERASMUS to MAGIC.
- Identify, obtain and load MARC records for electronic resources, microforms
and other backlogs.
- Discuss cataloging priorities to improve visibility for MSU digitization
projects, grey literature, RAMs, Web sites, PDFs, and titles in monographic
series.
- With Technical Services, continue to develop a bibliographer role
in contributing basic MAGIC records.
IV. LIBRARY PROMOTION
Goal: Promote the use of the University Libraries and appropriate information
resources.
- Work with the library Public Relations committee.
- Maintain direct bibliographer contacts with university faculty.
- Publicize significant library collections through the Features space on
the Libraries Web page.
- Develop displays/exhibits that highlight collections.
- Offer seminars, lectures and colloquia that promote our collections, including
programs in support of diversity.
V. RESOURCE SHARING
Goal: Provide maximum access to resources for our users through cooperative
efforts.
- Cooperate with CIC, CRL and national consortia for efficiency and savings.
- Cooperate on projects within the state such as MelCat and the MLC electronic
journal consortia.
- Cooperate with the MSU College of Law Library and the Library of Michigan,
especially on OPAC records.
VI. REMOTE ACCESS
Goal: Make Library resources available remotely.
- Pursue opportunities to replace print-format resources with digital equivalents.
- Pursue licenses for electronic resources licenses that allow important
library functions: access by walk-in users, ILL, permanent access, third
party archiving.
- Pursue technologies that facilitate remote access, consistent with security.
- Work with Development and the DMC to evaluate potential grants supporting
digitization of MSU collections.
- Educate faculty, students and staff about remote access to library collections.
VII. ADMINISTRATION
Goal: Provide an appropriate space and environment, and administrative
support, for research and study/services and activities.
- Keep Collection Development Policy statements current:
- Revise the online Bibliographers Manual to improve draft contents.
- Manage materials funds effectively and efficiently:
- Use USAS, OCLC WCA and other analysis tools to review the share of money
allocated to specific funds in the '06-07 budget.
- Minimize the need for end-of-year "big ticket" purchases by accurately
projecting serials inflation and managing the monthly flow of orders.
- Share information within the division:
- Coordinators should hold regular meetings for each of their subject area
groups.
- AD will hold coordinator meetings twice a month and post minutes.
- AD will hold all-bibliographer meetings four times a year ("fifth
Wednesdays").
- Carry out internal library administrative procedures on time:
- Submit personal goals & objectives for 2006-2007 during May or June
2006.
- Complete written mid-year and spring evaluations on time (September and
March).
VIII. DIVERSITY
Goal: Maintain a diverse staff with the skills to support the Libraries'
goals.
- Hire and retain staff with appropriate skills.
- Serve under-represented populations through collections, staffing, instruction
and liaison.
- Address library-related social issues through professional activities.
IX. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Goal: Contribute to the development and dissemination of new knowledge.
- Support staff development programs to keep staff skills up-to-date.
- Support professional and scholarly activity by members of the Division:
- Speaking, writing and other scholarly and creative activities.
- Participation in local, state, regional, national and international associations.
X. FUNDING
Goal: Seek additional sources of funding from outside the University.
- Pursue grants and fund raising targetted to library needs.
- With the library's Development Officer, manage our endowments carefully:
- Prepare a comprehensive statement listing the purposes, rules/limits,
and responsible selectors for each library endowment.
- Spend available funds for the year, unless saving for
a large purchase or reinvestment is planned.
- Contact each donor at least once per year to report on use of funds from
their endowment.
