Collection Division Goals and Objectives 2005-2006
I. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Goal: Provide a collection of information resources that will support
the identifiable research needs of the university community as well as those
of scholars worldwide.
- Select new and retrospective research materials needed by faculty and students.
- Respond to university curriculum initiatives:
- Monitor major program changes in Colleges and Departments.
- Assess collection implications if the College of Human Medicine expands
to Grand Rapids.
- Pursue a unified approach to collecting electronic materials:
- Establish principles, criteria and policies for selection of these materials
generally.
- Assess advantages and disadvantages of selecting "free" electronic
Web sites in particular.
- Set priorities for collection electronic texts from MSU sources (with
Archives).
II. SERVICE TO USERS
Goal: Provide instructional services and personal assistance to aid
library users in identifying, locating, and using resources.
- Provide public service through reference, appointment, and/or scheduled
office hours outside the library
- Strengthen liaison contacts with Colleges and Departments:
- Participate in Angel implementation and VU course development.
- Contact new faculty hires ASAP, with on-campus follow-up.
- Add signature from bibliographer to letter and journal survey sent to
new faculty.
- Report specific journal title results from the survey to the Director
of Libraries.
- Identify librarians offering library instruction to each university program.
- Consider possible liaison to the new residential humanities college.
- Provide users with Web-based Research Guides:
- Review existing guides, update and revise for accuracy, date them, and
sign them.
- Create new research guides where called for.
- Develop a template to create a uniform page design, simplify updating,
and organize URLs.
- Assist in implementing new Innovative Interfaces software that improves
access to full text:
- WebBridge for OpenURL.
- MetaFind for federated searching.
III. COLLECTION MAINTENANCE
Goal: Organize, maintain, control, preserve and secure the collection
for maximum utilization.
- Codify collection management procedures and post them online, including:
- Collection renewal.
- Procedures for lost/paid items.
- Grey literature project.
- Projects involving pdfs.
- Use III's Electronic Resources Management software to track licenses and
features of databases.
- Work with conservation and preservation staff to:
- Identify areas within the collection with greatest needs.
- Add a "Preservation Review Shelf" to procedure for gifts and
paperbound books.
- Consider "medium rare" storage of some fragile or rare books.
- Make best possible use of stack space:
- Review duplicates in the collection.
- Review CRL holdings to identify gaps we could fill in by donations.
- Develop procedures to preserve electronic resources:
- Pursue adequate archiving in licenses when moving to electronic-only subscriptions.
- Participate in CIC archiving projects and national programs such as LOCKSS.
- Determine options for preserving MSU-based electronic publications (with
Archives).
- Increase the share of our holdings that have good OPAC records:
- Identify, obtain and load MARC records for electronic resources, microforms
and other backlogs.
- Improve visibility for new kinds of material: MSU digitization projects,
grey literature, RAMs, Web sites, pdfs.
- Address the need for cataloging that analyzes titles in monographic series.
- Cooperate with Technical Services to create role for bibliographers in
contributing basic MAGIC records.
IV. LIBRARY PROMOTION
Goal: Promote the use of the University Libraries and appropriate information
resources.
- Work with the library Public Relations committee.
- Maintain direct bibliographer contacts with university faculty.
- Publicize significant library collections through the Features space on
the Libraries Web page.
- Develop displays/exhibits that highlight collections.
- Offer seminars, lectures and colloquia that promote our collections, including
programs in support of diversity.
V. RESOURCE SHARING
Goal: Provide maximum access to resources for our users through cooperative
efforts.
- Cooperate with CIC, CRL and national consortia for efficiency and savings.
- Cooperate on projects in the state such as MelCat and MLC electronic journal
consortia.
- Cooperate with the MSU College of Law Library.
- Pursue electronic resources licenses that accept Inter Library Loan and
Fair Use.
VI. REMOTE ACCESS
Goal: Make Library resources available remotely.
- Pursue electronic resources licenses that support remote access.
- Pursue technologies that facilitate remote access, consistent with security.
- Work with Development and the DMC to identify grants supporting digitization
of MSU collections.
- Educate faculty, students and staff about remote access to library collections.
VII. ADMINISTRATION
Goal: Provide an appropriate space and environment, and administrative
support, for research and study/services and activities.
- Prepare Collection Development Statements:
- Complete the online Bibliographers Manual (recognizing that changes and
draft text play a part).
- Manage materials funds effectively and efficiently:
- Evaluate the system for allocating money to the specific funds.
- Manage the flow of orders to minimize the need to end the year with "big
ticket" items.
- Share information within the division:
- Coordinators: hold regular meetings for each subject area group.
- AD: hold coordinator meetings twice a month and post minutes.
- AD: hold all-bibliographer meetings four times a year ("fifth Wednesdays").
- Carry out internal library administrative procedures on time:
- Submit personal goals & objectives for 2005-2006 during May or June
2005.
- Complete written midyear and spring evaluations on time.
VIII. DIVERSITY
Goal: Maintain a diverse staff with the skills to support the Libraries'
goals.
- Hire and retain staff with appropriate skills.
- Serve under-represented populations through collections, staffing, instruction
and liaison.
- Address library-related social issues through professional activities.
IX. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Goal: Contribute to the development and dissemination of new knowledge.
- Support staff development programs to keep staff skills up-to-date.
- Support professional and scholarly activity by members of the Division:
- Speaking, writing and other scholarly and creative activities.
- Participation in local, state, regional, national and international associations.
X. FUNDING
Goal: Seek additional sources of funding from outside the University.
- Pursue grants and fund raising targetted to library needs.
- With the library's Development Officer, manage our endowments carefully:
- State the purposes and rules for each library endowment.
- Specify which selectors are eligible and responsible for spending in each
endowment.
- Spend available funds each year, unless reinvestment or saving for a large
purchases is planned.
- Contact every donor at least once per year to report use of funds from
their endowment.
