Collection Division Goals and Objectives 2004-2005
I. Providing a collection of information resources which will support the identifiable
research needs of the university community as well as those of scholars worldwide.
- Monitor changes in the Colleges and Departments in light of the Provost's
report.
- Participate in Planning for the collection needs if the College of Human
Medicine moves to Grand Rapids.
- Assess the need for availability of MARC records for microform and electronic
resources.
- Make progress on the Bibliographers Manual.
- Assist in implementation of the new III software; especially consider implications
for "free" items found in Erasmus.
- Continue to review and revise and write collection development policies
and link to them from the Collections web page.
II. Providing instructional services and personal assistance to aid library
users in identifying, locating, and using resources.
- Strengthen liaison with Colleges particularly with Angel implementation.
- Continue to create Research Guides.
- Review and revise web pages.
III. Organizing, maintaining, controlling, preserving, and securing the collection
for maximum utilization.
- Codify procedures related to collection management such as collection renewal,
procedures for lost/paid items, grey literature project, etc. and provide
links to these from the collections web page.
- Work with Conservation to identify areas within the collection needing treatment.
- Work with Access & Preservation to find space for new materials; reviewing
duplicates in the collection is one aspect.
- Reviewing holdings of CRL to identify gaps that we might fill in their collection
and possible withdrawal of duplicated materials in our collection.
IV. Promoting the use of the University Libraries and appropriate information
resources.
- Work with the Public Relations group on highlighting resources on the Features
portion of the Libraries Web page.
- Develop displays/exhibits which highlight the collections.
- Pursue opportunities for seminars, lectures, colloquia, etc. which promote
the collections.
- Work with the Digital Media Center to identify collections or opportunities
for digitization projects.
- Participate in developing programs in support of diversity.
V. Making Library resources available remotely.
- Continue to identify resources which expand our electronic footprint.
- Strengthen liaison with faculty, students, and staff in making them aware
of the resources available and in how to access them remotely.
VI. Providing maximum access to resources by our users through cooperative
efforts.
- Continue to work cooperatively with MLC, CIC, and other Michigan Institutions
on collection development.
- Work with Development on fund raising activities.
