Pay Rates 2004-2005

Level I Student Assistant:  $6.46 to $8.03
Level II Student Assistant:  $7.01 to $8.77
Level III Student Assistant: $7.65 to $9.54
Level IV Student Assistant:  $8.34 to $11.52

Government Documents Student Jobs

Trainee: Shelves using streamers. Training includes learning call number systems, understanding shelving streamers, shifting, identifying copy 2s, identifying call number conflicts and problems.

Level II Jobs

Stacks Student II: Responsible for shelving, shelfreading, shifting and maintaining the neatness and orderliness of an assigned call number area.  Rotates duties such as pickup of books on the floor and recording statistics and providing call number assistance for patrons. May do searching for cataloging  projects.  Understands and can find call numbers in all Government Documents collections. Other duties as assigned. (Stacks Team).

Database Student II: Responsible for barcoding, linking and displaying records in the database. May work with monograph and serial records. May inlcude searching and relabeling books, editing bibliographic records, creating multivolume records, checkin records and cards. Understands and can find call numbers in all Government Documents collections. (Database Team)

Reference Shelver II: Picks up all and reshelves as reference books. Counts, sorts and keeps statistics on items picked up.  Reshelves all reference books. Understands and can find call numbers in all Government Documents collections. (Acquisitions and Processing Team)

Typist II: Types book labels.  Does miscellaneous typing, photocopying and computer projects. Stamps, tattletapes and labels items for special locations. Other duties as assigned.  (Acquisitions & Processsing Team)

Binding Assistant II: Searches, organizes and prepares titles for binding.  Processes items returning from the bindery. Other duties as assigned. Understands and can find call numbers in all Government Documents collections. (Serials and Binding Team)

Depository  Processor II: Opens depository shipments and orders, stamping appropriately and transferring call number from shipping lists.  Works with online monograph records. Sorts items for appropriate check-in in all Government Documents collections. Other duties as assigned.  (Acquisitions and Processing Team)

Level III Jobs


Bindery Supervisor III:  Oversight for bindery preparation and processing and maintaining workflow. Trains, schedules and monitors the work of student staff.  Maintains the binding budget, keeps statistics, writes reports and procedures. Trains students in aspects of bindery preparation and processing and monitors their work. Understands and can find call numbers in all Government Documents collections. Part of student management team which meets weekly. (Serials & Binding Team and Monographs & Projects Team) 

Administrative Assistant III:  Handles payroll and student personnel records. Responsible for portions of the Government Documents Intranet. Other projects as assigned. (Administrative & Systems Team)

Office Manager III: Training and experience in documents office and processing procedures is necessary.  Assists in training and supervising the work of student staff in a variety of other tasks, including depository box opening,  typing book labels, computer projects, reference pickup and shelving, processing materials for reference locations. Handles acquisitions in all collections: U.S., Michigan, International and Canadian.  Participates in a student management team which oversees the processing operation and meets weekly. Has resposibility and oversight of certain areas of work, such as call number problems, gifts, etc. Part of student management team which meets weekly. ( Processing and Acquisitions Team)

Stacks Supervisor III: Trains and monitors the work of Level II Trainees.  Makes recommendations about retention and job placement of trainees.. Monitors the work of a team of Level II students:  checks and then spot-checks shelving and shelfreading and condition of the stacks, accuracy of searching, or other projects. Participates in a student management team which oversees the stacks and meets weekly. (Stacks Team)


Level III-IV Jobs


Stacks Supervisor III/IV: Oversight for the stacks and the stacks portion of any projects. Trains, schedules and monitors the work of student supervisors in those areas.  Evaluates work and identifies and reports problems in shelving and reshelving, shelfreading, searches or other projects.  Keeps statistics and writes reports.  Part of student management team which meets weekly. (Stacks Team)

Database Management Manager III/IV:  Trains, schedules and monitors the work of students . Responsible for training and monitoring the work of student supervisors, and scheduling them to train and monitor the work of other students.  Evaluates work and identifies and reports problems.  Keeps statistics and writes reports. Evaluates and makes recommendations on changes in procedures or workflow processes.  Part of student management team which meets weekly. (Serials & Binding Team and Monographs & Projects Team)

Office Manager IV/Processing Office: Extensive training and experience in documents office and processing procedures is necessary.  Hires, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates student staff in the processing office.  Responsible for delegating work to Office Managers III and scheduling them to train and monitor the work of other students.  Takes responsibility for complex projects.  Responsible for specific other tasks, such as claims, U.S. Documents Discard Lists, GPO call number corrections, U.S. call number conflicts.  Understands and trains students in acquisitions of all collections: U.S., Michigan, International and Canadian. Participates in a student management team which oversees the Processing Office and meets weekly. (Acquisitions and Processing Team)

Administrative Assistant IV:  Responsible for maintaining internal databases, including student personnel and payroll databases. Helps to maintain the Government Documents Intranet site. Maintains pages, creates programs to assist staff.
