Older Americans Month

In the 2000 Federal Census there were 35.0 million people age 65 and over counted. That was about 12 percent of the total population. In tribute to elderly people, May was designated Older Americans Month in 1963. The theme of this year's observance is "America: A Community for All Ages." President Bush said in a Proclamation on May 1, 2002 that "the celebration also recognizes the extended role seniors play in our families, communities, and workplaces, as they live longer, healthier, and more productive lives." Despite being an American holiday, aging is a characteristic shared worldwide.
