African-American History Month

Black History Month honors the past achievements and ongoing contributions of African-Americans and people of African descent.  Negro History Week was created by the talented African-American, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, the son of ex-slaves.  In 1926, while attending Harvard University, he established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.  He created "Negro History Week" as a way to spread knowledge about black people around the world.  His work helped to raise awareness of Black History.  Today, as a national and international observance, African-American History Week has expanded to the entire month of February.
