Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the world’s largest, on-going telephone health survey system, tracking health conditions and risk behaviors in the United States yearly since 1984. Conducted by the 50 state health departments as well as those in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands with support from the CDC, BRFSS provides state-specific information about issues such as asthma, diabetes, health care access, alcohol use, hypertension, obesity, cancer screening, nutrition and physical activity, tobacco use, and more.
Health and Medical Care Archive
Available through ICPSR, the Health and Medical Care Archive (HMCA) preserves and disseminates data collected by research projects funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care in the United States. It includes surveys of health care professionals, investigations of access to medical care, evaluations of innovative programs for the delivery of health care, and surveys on substance abuse.
Henry A. Murray Research Archive
The Henry A. Murray Research Archive is the endowed, permanent repository for quantitative and qualitative research data at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science, and provides physical storage for the entire IQSS Dataverse Network. The collection comprises over 125 terabytes of data, audio, and video. It preserves in perpetuity all types of data of interest to the research community, including numerical, video, audio, interview notes, and other data. Applications may have to be submitted to access data.
Available through the Harvard-MIT Data Center, this archive browses collections and surveys.
Michigan Health Statistics and Reports
The Department of Community Health is responsible for the collection of information on a range of health related issues. The information is collected to monitor the general health and well-being of Michigan's citizens. These data are useful for health program development, targeting and evaluation of program progress. The information is used to identify emerging health issues and trends and can be made available for epidemiological research. Statistics are developed from the data collected to provide basic information on these health events in Michigan. The data are provided at the state, county and community level. The published reports and surveys section is a good section, which includes the Critical Health Indictaors, which includes some mental health questions. In the column on the far right are various topics. Some of which have data and statistics. Clicking on Mental Health & Substance Abuse will expand the left column to show a section on Mental Health and a section on Substance Abuse. Clicking on either one will give an option to look at Statistics and Reports with data for Michigan.
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
The NIDA has trends and statistics on drug abuse on general information but also by age, race, hospital visits, economic costs, and much more.
National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) Series
The NSDUH, which was formerly known as the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), is designed to produce drug and alcohol use incidence and prevalence estimates and report the consequences and patterns of use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian population aged 12 and older.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA)
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA) is an initiative of the Office of Applied Studies, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The goal of the archive is to provide ready access to substance abuse and mental health research data and to promote the sharing of these data among researchers, academics, policymakers, service providers, and others, thereby increasing the use of the data in understanding and assessing substance abuse and mental health problems and the impact of related treatment systems.
