What is the difference between data and statistics?

Data is raw information from which statistics are created. Data can come from studies, questionnaires, and research. Statistics are summaries of part of that data. For example, the US Census results are data, but the fact that 51.9% of the East Lansing population in 2000 was female is a statistic. The numbers came from the census data and were used to create a statistic.
