netLibrary

The MSU Libraries offers more than 10,000 electronic books, or eBooks, through our membership in the Michigan Library Consortium. Trade and university press materials, as well as popular materials are included.

Accessing the new eBook collection is easy. MSU students, faculty, and staff can even access eBooks from their homes or offices! All that's required is that you first register as a netLibrary user from any computer on campus, or remotely, using a system configured to use the MSU Proxy Server.

To use netLibrary go directly to http://www.netlibrary.com for access into the eBook collection. Once you create your unique login and password, you will be able to access the collection of eBooks from anywhere you have an Internet connection.

How to set up a netLibrary account

If you have not yet created a netLibrary Account, please make a note of these instructions. Then go back to the library catalog item record for your selection, click on "Read this ebook" and follow these steps:

  1. You should see a netLibrary web page with the identifying phrase, "Michigan State University eBook Collection." Look at the top right corner of the page. You should find a link that says "Create a Free Account" and click on it.
  2. You should see a web page that asks you to give yourself a username and a password. These should NOT be the same as your MSU netID username and password.
    • Choose something you can remember, and write down the username and password for future use and keep it in the safe place.
    • Fill in the other required fields: Username, Password (twice), Question and Answer, First Name, Last Name, Country and E-mail). You are NOT required to submit your phone number or address: you may leave those boxes empty.
  3. Press 'Create Account' button. As soon as your account is set up, you will be able to log in and make full use of netLibrary.

Note that you can "browse" a netLibrary eBook without "checking it out" electronically. Note also that the MSU Libraries buy individual copies of netLibrary eBooks: in other words, if a specific eBook is in use by one reader, then it will not be available to other readers until "returned" to the shelf electronically.
