Trinkets and Treasures: the Art of Collecting

  • Collect (verb): 1. to gather together from a variety of places or over a period of time. 2. to get and keep things of one type such as stamps or coins as a hobby.
  • Collection (noun): 1. a group of objects of one type that have been collected by one person or in one place.
  • Collector (noun): someone who collects objects because they are beautiful, valuable or interesting.
  • Collectable, collectible (adjective): describes something that is considered to be worth collecting as a hobby. (noun): any object which people want to collect as a hobby. (Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary)

We all "accumulate" stuff to some degree (perhaps unintentionally), but true collectors do it purposely with a passion sometimes bordering on obsession. This exhibit explores the fascinating world of collecting, through the private collections of various Library staff members.
