MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Policy and Procedure Statement 2.5.5

M.S.U. Theses

January 1996

One copy of each thesis submitted to the University is deposited in the Library.

I.    Source.

A.   Doctoral dissertations and Masters theses are received through the Graduate School in two formats, a bound copy and a microfiche copy.

B.   Added copies of theses are occasionally acquired by departmental libraries for inclusion in their collections.

II.   Processing.

A.   Dissertations and theses and matching microfiche are sent to the Monograph Acquisitions Team which is responsible for checking them, upon receipt, against the bound thesis and dissertation list supplied by the Graduate School. Bound copies and microfiche may not arrive simultaneously. After both the bound copy and the microfiche copy arrive Monograph Acquisitions marks the number of fiche in the bound thesis, stamp the bound copy "thesis" and distribute the microfiche to Database Management and the bound copy to Original Cataloging. Monograph Acquisitions also coordinates the processing of multiple copies received for the departmental libraries or as gifts. In either case, a Library Bibliographer determines the location.

B.   They are cataloged but not classified. (See 2.1.1).

III. Locations.

A.   The first copy of all theses will be cataloged for the Main collection with one exception:

1.   Music scores will be cataloged for the Music Library.

B.   If available, an added copy will be cataloged for another location upon request.
