Orientation - New Employees

Every new employee, regardless of previous training or experience, needs to be introduced to the work environment of his/her new employer and instructed in the performance of specific tasks. Orientation programs are intended to get the new employee off to a good start by establishing a sense of belonging and cooperation, by creating favorable attitude, by supplying necessary information that will answer an employee's questions, and by removing fears or uncertainties which may be barriers to effective job learning and performance.

A.   Librarians

An Orientation Checklist is provided to the primary supervisor prior to the arrival of the new librarian by the Libraries Human Resources Office.  The Libraries Human Resources Office will supply a copy of this checklist.

It is the responsibility of the supervisor to develop an individual orientation program using the orientation Checklist as a guide for each new librarian. This includes arranging for the new librarian to meet with persons within each Division as well as for learning the specifics of the position.

The Libraries Human Resources Office may be consulted regarding any questions related to personnel policies and procedures.

B.   Library Support Personnel

The MSU Human Resources Office requires orientation of every new non-academic employee and provides a checklist of items to be covered in orientation. The Libraries' Human Resource Office and the new employee's immediate supervisor will conduct the orientation with the employee. It will be initiated by the Libraries' Human Resources office and concluded by the supervisor within the first five days of the new employee's starting date.

As noted on the copy of the orientation checklist, the Libraries Human Resources Office will cover the items checked. The list will then be forwarded to the appropriate area and all remaining points on the list are to be covered by the supervisor.

All copies of the checklist, with each item on the list checked to indicate the item was discussed with the employee, are signed and dated and returned to the Libraries Human Resources Office for review.

A copy of the checklist will be given to the new employee; one copy will be retained for the Libraries Personnel file; and the original copy forwarded to the University Human Resources Office.
