Microforms Library - Function and Responsibilities
November 2000

The Microforms Library includes microfilm, microfiche and microcard collections of dissertations; newspapers; books in series such as Early American Imprints and Books in English Before 1601; official government publications of several countries such as publications and records found in the National Archives, British sessional Papers, and the Census of India; special materials such as the Human Relations Area Files (HARF) and ERIC Documents; and a large number of microform sets such as the Kress-Goldsmith Collection. The Microforms Library is administered by the head of Reserve Reading/Copy Services/Periodical Reading Room/Microforms Collection and is staffed by library clerks and student assistants.

Microforms are selected by bibliographers and subject specialists in the Collections Management Division and are acquired through the trade channels.

Microform materials appear in MAGIC. Many of the items listed are catalogued but not classified. The unclassified materials are assigned accession numbers. Many microform series are analyzed in MAGIC. Additional access to Microforms is provided by the following sources in the Microforms Library: printed indexes to series, HRAF manuals, printed guides to sets, and guides prepared by the bibliographers. Access to ERIC Documents is provided by selecting Electronic Resources from the Libraries' home page, then the subject Education, and then ERIC from the Databases menu.

The Microforms Library has 4 microfiche readers, 8 microfilm readers, and microprint/microcard readers. Materials may be copied using the equipment housed in the Copy Center (5 microfilm/fiche reader-printers, 1 microprint copier and 1 microfiche duplicator).
