Special thanks to the Jackson District Library for hosting the Godort of Michigan Spring Meeting on April 29, 1998.
Barbara J. Clayton, of the U.S. Census Bureau, gave a presentation on NAICS. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is in the process of replacing the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. It was developed in cooperation with Statistics Canada and Mexico's INEGI. NAICS, when implemented, will provide for comparable statistics between the three NAFTA trading partners.
NAICS industries are identified by a 6-digit code, in contrast to the 4-digit SIC code. The longer code accomodates the larger number of sectors and allows more flexibility in designating subsectors. It also provides for additional detail not necessarily appropriate for all three NAICS countries. There are 350 new industries being separately recognized for the first time with the implementation of NAICS. A few examples include warehouse clubs, pet supply stores, cable networks, HMO medical centers, and casinos.

In the afternoon Ann Sanders of the Library of Michigan demonstrated Michigan Legislative and Legal Information on the Web. The two major sites demonstrated were the Michigan Administrative Code web site at
http://www.state.mi.us/execoff/admincode/about.htm and the Michigan Legislature web site at http://michiganlegislature.org/.
Paula Kaczmarek also reported on the recent Depository Library Council in Washington.
- The meeting was called to order by Larry Hall at 2:05pm.
- The minutes of the December 5, 1997 meeting were read by Sharon Bradley and approved, unanimously.
- A Treasurer’s Report was presented by Michael McDonnell. Per Michael's request, Jon Harrison switched the CD funds to the regular bank account in January. Bank charges have been reduced because of a switch to business class account which permits 150 transactions per month but must maintain $3000 balance. The deposit of proceeds from the CD ensures that we will maintain the minimum balance. In response to a question about a gift expense, Michael noted that Godort of Michigan sent a a potted plant by FTD to Francis Buckley when he was appointed as Superintendent of Documents.
- New Business. Paula Kaczmarek solicited program ideas for the upcoming year, Godort of Michigan's 20th anniversary year. Grace York suggested inviting Fran Buckley, the Superintendent of Documents, to visit. Paula informed the group that Mr. Buckley was prohibited from accepting travel or food reimbursement, but if he was already in the area he might accept a speaking engagement. There is interest in having a 20th anniversary celebration of some sort. Judy Field suggested publicizing the event with a notice in the MLA newsletter. Debbi Schaubman inquired whether anyone would like another program on the United Nations or European Union. Speakers are available for a fee. The possibility of having a session on the harmonized tariff schedules was suggested.
- Old Business. Grace York asked about status of the Thurston Award Committee. It is alive and well according to Sue Krueger and an announcement about a new winner is forthcoming. Paula Kaczmarek asked about sending Jenny Cross, one of the founders of Godort of Michigan, congratulations on her retirement and the group unanimously approved.
- Elections were conducted by Larry Hall. Margo Zieske was elected President-Elect; Janet Schneider Director-At-Large;
and Debbie Gallagher Treasurer.
- Miscellaneous Announcements. Carole Callard is recuperating from a broken ankle in Ann Arbor and Grace York is going to be honored at the annual ALA CIS breakfast.
- A motion to adjourn was unanimously approved and the meeting adjorned at 2:37p.m.
- Signatures were gathered to enable the transfer of bank account check signing privileges.
- There was a discussion of re-affiliation with Michigan Library Association. There was a decision not to pursue it at this time.
- In light of the interest in getting Francis Buckley to speak (he is speaking at Wayne State in Spring 1999), Paula wants to form a program committee.
- Margo mentioned that Nancy Myers from Wichita State would be willing to come and talk about the Documents DataMiner. Jon added that Cynthia Teague might be willing to repeat her DLC presentation on cross-training reference and documents staff.
- Looking at Fall and Spring. September would be a good time for the fall meeting.
- Debbie will put a message on MichLib-L regarding Speakers Bureau. Paula noted that the bureau had already received a few inquiries about possible speaking engagements.
- Paula would like to try to have Executive Committee meetings separate from the general meetings. It was suggested that the Executive Committee should try to meet August 17th at 10:00 a.m. in Lansing. Reports from the Program and Anniversary Committees will be expected as well as news about appointing an awards committee.
The State Plan for providing federal government information to the citizens of Michigan is undergoing extensive revisions in order to work well in the electronic information environment. The "Michigan Plan for the Federal Documents Depository Library System" was the first in the nation in 1982 and was last revised in 1993. It guides the federal depository libraries in Michigan in providing documents, information, service, and can be read at

The Plan creates the Michigan Council of Federal Depository Libraries to interpret and monitor it. Current members of the MCFDL are Kelly Eastwood, Northern Michigan University; Michael McDonnell, Western Michigan University; Janet Schneider, Schoolcraft College; Paula Kaczmarek, Detroit Public Library; and Ann Marie Sanders, Library of Michigan. Anne Birkam, Public Libraries of Saginaw, is the GODORT of Michigan representative. The Council is soliciting remarks, requests, and suggestions from the library community in the state.

GODORT of Michigan is pleased to announce that Saundra W. Williams and staff have been selected to receive the 1998 GODORT-Michigan Paul W. Thurston Award. The award recognizes an outstanding contribution to the professional literature that improves access to government information at the international, federal, state or local level.
The winner of this year’s award is Uncle Sam’s Migrating Government Publications. The URL for it is http://www.lib.memphis.edu/gpo/mig.htm. This Web page has been a real asset to documents librarians and their customers to follow those items from paper to electronic format.

Saundra W. Williams was born in Oklahoma and graduated from Vanderbilt University’s library school in 1977 and has served as Head of Government Publications for the Regional Depository Library at the University of Memphis since 1980. She was instrumental in the designation of the University of Memphis as Tennessee’s regional depository in 1990.
All of us in Michigan are pleased to give the Paul W. Thurston Award to Saundra Williams and her staff who have made a contribution that is used on a daily basis since its debut in March of 1996.
GODORT-Michigan presents the award in memory of Paul W. Thurston, who set exemplary professional standards as founding editor of its newsletter, Red Tape, as contributor to several bibliographic projects, GODORT-Michigan hopes to encourage others in both new and ongoing contributions to the documents literature.
