Special thanks to all the people who made our winter meeting on
February 17th at the Cooley Law School Library a great success.
Approximately 70 people registered, many visiting with GODORT of
Michigan for the first time and taking the opportunity to tour the
new Cooley Law School Library.
The theme of the meeting was BACK TO LIBRARY SCHOOL: GOVERNMENT
DOCUMENTS 101. The following people generously made presentations
on their favorite reference tools:
Everyone enjoyed the sessions and someone even asked when a
"Government Documents 201" presentation could be made.
Following the program, a reception was held honoring two recent
retirees from the Library of Michigan: Anne Diamond and Carole
Callard.
Acting on behalf of Godort of Michigan, Cass Hartnett made the
following comments in honor of Anne Diamond:
"I first really met Anne Diamond when I interviewed for my current
job. During the interview, she was warm, yet quietly authoritative
and eminently composed.
Now, as many of you know, I did not grow up in the Midwest and am
not always used to local weather patterns. But after a few weeks
on the job at the Detroit Public Library, I knew that I had been
hit by a tornado out of Lansing.
Why would I characterize Anne Diamond this way? Because Anne has
an awful lot of power, boundless energy, and sharing the road with
her is an experience you don't ever forget.
Over the past two and a half years, Anne's professional advising
role with me has taken many different forms and has taken us to
many different locations, including Anne's own home in Lansing, to
Chicago, Washington, D.C., Mackinaw Island, and one of Anne's
favorite spots, a bench inside the Tel-Twelve Shopping Mall in
Pontiac. Thank you, Anne, for spending so much time educating me,
and all of us.
Many of you, when I spoke with you about Anne, loosely associate
the birth of GODORT of Michigan with the birth of Anne's son. One
person commented directly on Anne's husband Walker and son Bryan,
describing them as "lovely people", which of course they are. They
are the lucky ones, getting to spend more time with Anne now.
Documents librarians and the Library of Michigan staff may be
seeing her a little less, but none of us are convinced that we've
seen the last of her. Congratulations, Anne!"
Kim Ranger from the Grand Valley State University Library also
presented Anne with numerous humorous items that only a documents
librarian would appreciate.
Cass Harnett also made the following remarks about Carole Callard:
"It is with joy but a few pangs of sadness that we wish Carole
Callard the very best in her new position at the Government
Printing Office.
We all know that Carole will be fair, thoughtful, and a very
knowledgeable depository library inspector and that GODORT of
Michigan will surely want to book her as a keynote speaker a year
hence.
My first recollections of Carole were when she served as program
Chair for a GODORT meeting in Ann Arbor. I wondered who this
librarian was who knew every last detail about documents and also
made everyone at the meeting feel so welcome.
Carole has an uncanny ability to put people at ease; after only a
brief conversation with her, you have the sense that you've known
her for years.
The loss to the Library of Michigan and to the genealogy and
documents communities is clear; but Sheila McGarr's gain is even
more evident. To GPO we can say, you are getting one of Michigan's
finest exports! Congratulations, Carole!"
Diane Van Der Pol from the Calvin College Library also presented
Carole with numerous humorous items that she will hopefully find
useful at GPO.
Nominations are now being accepted for three GODORT of Michigan
offices:
