(3) Michigan State Plan Under Review
The Michigan Council of Depository Libraries is in the process of revising the
State Plan, and seeks your advice on wording regarding membership on the
Council. There are three elected members to the Council and in regard to these
positions the current Plan states: "Special efforts will be made to secure
representation from the First Congressional District." The Council is
discussing whether we should continue to define our membership by geography, or
whether we should instead concentrate on various types of libraries or
underserved areas.
The Council is considering three options:
- Keep the current wording.
- Expand the current wording to include special populations, such as law
libraries or underserved areas (tenth and fourteenth districts) in addition to
the first district. In this case the wording would be something along the
lines of: "Special efforts will be made to secure representation from the
First Congressional District, or special populations such as law libraries, or
underserved areas such as the Tenth and Fourteenth Congressional Districts."
- Eliminate this statement entirely and simply open nomination to each of
these three positions to persons from any depository library within the state,
regardless of location or type.
Please submit your comments and opinions on this matter to Diane VanderPol no later than March 13. The Council will meet again on March 14.
