(1) “ALL [DOCUMENTS] IS LOCAL”
Shawn Nicholson has been hard at work putting together a fall program for Thursday, November 7. It will held at the Livonia Civic Center Library and will feature the theme "ALL [DOCOMENTS] IS LOCAL".
Featured speakers will include:
- Mr. Pat Hudson, Director of Urban Options - http://www.urbanoptions.org
Mr. Hudson will speak about the nature of work going on in his not-for-profit, particularly focusing on the types of materials required for this work.
- Ms. Colleen Layton, Director of Member Resource Services of the Michigan Municipal League -
http://www.mml.org
Ms. Layton will speak about the nature of the Michigan Municipal League and its efforts to help cities and township produce and disseminate their materials.
- Ms. Amanda Polanco, Librarian for Southeast Michigan Council of Governments - http://www.semcog.org
Ms. Polanco will speak about the trials and tribulation of working with local and regional information.
Registration will start and light refreshments will be available at 9 a.m. The program should start at 9:30 and last to around 12:30. A Godort of Michigan business meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. for those who wish to stay (or come back). Lunch is on your own
Registration costs $10 ($5 for students), but includes morning and afternoon refreshments. Send payment and registration information to Debbie Gallagher, Godort of Michigan Treasurer, 2713 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48105-2427. Be sure to include your name, organization, and e-mail address.

ARL is pleased to join the American Association of Law Libraries, American Library Association, the Medical Library Association, and the Special Libraries Association in sponsoring a satellite teleconference:
"SAFEGUARDING OUR PATRONS' PRIVACY:
What Every Librarian Needs to Know About the USA PATRIOT Act
& Related Anti-Terrorism Measures."
This teleconference will provide libraries and their governing
institutions with an analysis of the implications of the recent
anti-terrorism measures, including the USA PATRIOT Act, the Attorney
General's Guidelines expanding the investigative powers of the FBI, and
the Homeland Security Act. Panelists will address the key legal issues
and policy implications for libraries as well as the impact of
legislative and regulatory proposals on the privacy and First Amendment
rights of library users. Panelists will also identify steps that
institutions need to take to comply with proper search warrants,
subpoenas, and wiretap requests from law enforcement.
Panelists will include:
Tracy Mitrano, Policy Advisor, Director of Computer Law and Policy, Office of the Vice President for Information Technology, Cornell University
James Neal, Vice President and University Librarian, Columbia
University Libraries
Gary Strong, Director, Queens Borough Public Library
Peter Swire, Professor of Law, Ohio State University
