“A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”
State Librarian Christie Brandau says that despite all the hype over broadband, only about 30 percent of Michigan's 387 public libraries have any sort of high-speed Internet access. The others either use dial-up access or provide no Internet services to library visitors. "And it's a shame in the information age", she says. "Broadband is a lifeline for our libraries".
