The Codex Alimentarius Commission was founded in 1963 by two United Nations agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Its 165 member nations represent most of the world’s population. The purpose of the Codex, or Food Code, is to protect the health of consumers by encouraging harmonization of food standards among countries and by supporting fair practices in the international food trade. Its 16 volumes, available in full text at the Commission’s web site, include both specific food product standards relating to production, composition, appearance, etc., and general standards applicable to all foods. The latter standards set recommended limits on pesticide and veterinary drug residues in food and establish guidelines for regulating: food labeling, food additives, food hygiene, food and nutrition for special dietary purposes and inspection and certification of food imports and exports. The Commission adopts revisions to the Codex as deemed necessary by new scientific findings or other relevant information brought to its attention.

Consumers international (CI) is an independent, non-profit global consumer advocacy organization. Founded in 1960 and supported by fees from its 250 member organizations in 115 countries and by foundation, government and multilateral agency grants, CI has developed model consumer protection laws in Africa, Latin America and the South Pacific. Its “campaigns and programmes” seek to promote the interests and empowerment of consumers worldwide in such critical areas, among others, as biotechnology, food security and safety and sustainable food production and consumption. Two major concerns of its current, four year “Food and Nutrition Programme” have been green food label claims in Europe and the United States and the hazards of genetically modified foods. CI’s survey results, research findings, policy briefing papers, manuals and guides, fact sheets and press releases – documenting its educational initiatives and efforts to influence national and international organizations - are all available for searching and downloading in English, French and Spanish at its web site .

The Food, Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is the Federal agency charged with “ensuring that the nation’s commercial supply of meat, poultry and egg products is safe, wholesome and correctly labeled and packaged.” To meet this goal it conducts federal and state inspection programs that monitor the safety of these products whether sold in interstate, intrastate or foreign commerce. Pursuant to its enforcement authority, FSIS may issue Notices of Warning, refer cases to a U.S. Attorney for criminal prosecution or seek civil actions such as seizures or injunctions in federal court. An archived record of these regulatory enforcement activities appears in Quarterly Enforcement Reports, available at the Agency web site. The FSIS site also provides lists of recalled meat and poultry products and current year-decertified foreign export companies. Individuals or firms that are repeat drug, pesticide or other chemical residue violators are also listed. Another page at the site documents the current activities of the U.S. Codex Office, the FSIS located headquarters for U.S. contact with the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

This school law website will help you stay abreast of how the courts are interpreting various laws in school settings. The current April article addresses school employees and the applicability of the ADEA. There are highly interesting articles and reviews of legal issues here, some of which date all of the way back to 1993. With many schools becoming war zones due to kids armed with hidden weapons, and parents and school districts desperate to assign blame, you can be sure that school law will continue to remain in the news. Also, since children's
rights and students' rights are becoming much more broadly interpreted, you will find some interesting articles and case commentary here. Many of you probably heard about the child who recently sued a teacher over a set of confiscated Pokemon cards. The child won the case. You never know what will happen next in the field of school law! Source: Brief Me Weekly E-Zine, April 18, 2000.

The environmental law page of the Legal Information Institute is a quick, concise way to access information about environmental law. While the text gives only a brief overview of the structure of environmental laws in the USA, the column on the right-hand side gives rapid access to all the major environmental acts as well as federal agency code--a very efficient way to access key language and materials. Other links zip the user to search pages where they can find environmental law decisions from either the Supreme Court or the US Circuit Courts of Appeals. Additionally, there are links to some state and international materials. However, it isn't all just dry statutes and case law; there are also connections to federal agency sites and other environmental sites such as Greenpeace. If you want to get to the meat of environmental legal materials, this site puts you where you need to be quickly and without a bunch of fussy graphics.

Environmental Laws, Regulations, Etc.
http://www.epa.gov/lawsregs/laws/index.html
Laws passed by Congress and signed by the President serve as the foundation for achieving the nation's environmental and public health protection goals. However, most laws do not have enough detail to be put into practice right away. EPA is called a regulatory agency because Congress authorizes us to write regulations that explain the critical technical, operational, and legal details necessary to implement laws.
In addition to these laws, a number of Executive Orders (E.O.s) issued by the President play a central role in our activities. The major laws and E.O.s are listed on this page and can be roughly divided into two categories:
(1) Laws and E.O.s that influence environmental protection
(2) Laws and E.O.s that influence EPA's regulatory process
For every law, we provide a link to the United States Code (U.S.C.), which is the codification by subject matter of the general and permanent laws of the United States. When possible, we also provide a link to a PDF version of each law because it is sometimes difficult to read the full text of in the U.S.C. The U.S.C. is updated annually, however, and therefore may provide a more current version of the law than the PDF version.

The Arthur W. Diamond Law Library at Columbia Law School maintains this excellent resource for finding materials on human rights and constitutional rights. The metasite serves students, scholars, and practitioners as a portal to documents and Internet resources on international and domestic law related to human and constitutional rights. The information resources are divided into six sections: Country Reports, International Links, Regional Links, National Links, Documents, and Other Web Resources. Each section is clearly organized into neat lists or pop-up menus to ease navigation. Marylin Raisch—the International, Comparative, and Foreign Law Librarian responsible for this metasite—also provides a Hot Topics section, which posts information on current events related to human and constitutional rights.

An ongoing initiative of the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the American University's Washington College of Law. The database is comprised of documents, in both English and Spanish, ratified by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, beginning with the commission's inception in 1960 and spanning to the present. The chronologically arranged documents include the commission's annual reports, sessional reports, and special situational reports. Currently, not all documents adopted by the commission are available. In the future, the site will include special country reports and thematic
reports. All content at the site is searchable. Source: Scout Report, January 26, 1999.

DIANA, a joint project provided by an international consortium of libraries and human rights organizations, is dedicated to the
construction of a comprehensive database of documents essential to human rights research. Currently, segments of the database are hosted by four libraries. Each library provides a unique set of documents for the collaborative database.
Unfortunately, users cannot query all four hosts at the same time; however, each host attempts to eliminate document duplication within the database as a whole in order to minimize overlap. Consequently, users must select a relevant host before searching or conduct parallel searches. Source: Scout Report, October 6, 1998.
