This pilot service from AustLII (Australian Legal Information Institute) offers free access to British and Irish legal materials, currently containing over 75,000 searchable documents with about 2 million hypertext links. At present, the site hosts fourteen databases from five jurisdictions, which may be searched individually or jointly. These include UK House of Lords Decisions, England and Wales High Court and Court of Appeal Decisions, Scottish High Court Decisions, Northern Ireland High Court and Court of Appeal Decisions, and Irish High Court and Court of Appeal Decisions, among others. Users may search the databases by keyword (supports Boolean searches), or browse cases and legislation by country and court/ legislative body. Links to additional legal materials via the AustLII site are also provided. Planned additions in the next month include UK Legislation, UK Statutory Instruments, Scottish Legislation, Scottish Statutory Instruments, and Irish Statutory Instruments.

Catherine P. Best, an attorney and Adjunct Professor with the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia, developed the Best Guide to Canadian Legal Research. The guide provides three clearly outlined tutorial modules for researching Canadian law. The first, Research Essentials, covers research strategies, research sources, and legal writing. The second module, Electronic Research, offers step-by-step instructions and training exercises for various electronic research tools. The third tutorial, Statutory Research, presents guides for the research of federal and provincial statutes and regulations. In addition to the tutorial modules, this site hosts a discussion list for legal researchers, maintains a glossary of legal terms, and provides a list of links to other legal research resources.

The Court of Justice and Court of First Instance of the European Communities provides a searchable and browsable database of recent case law judgements and opinions, dating from June 1997 to the present. Users can search this database by case number, date, names of parties, subject, or keyword. Clicking on any of the "list" buttons will bring up a complete index of terms for that list, greatly easing query and retrieval. Note that judgements and opinions may be available in any one or more of eleven languages, and that the Javascript navigation bars on the left side of the screen must be used once in the database (click on the question mark for an explanation of this navigation).

Europa, the European Union Server, has introduced a new service providing direct access to current European Union legal information. Includes the Official Journal of the European Communities, the Treaties, consolidated versions of existing legislation; and recent judgments by the Court of Justice. All of these documents are available in the eleven official languages of the EU. The web page also offers access to all legislation in force, as well as new draft legislation presented by the Commission to Parliament and the Council, plus other documents accompanying the legislative process.

This year was epoch-making for legal research via the net in Japan because of the launch of three new official sites: the consolidated code database, the Supreme Court judgment database and the Gazette database. They are useful for researchers to search Japanese law. The purpose of this article is to introduce the limited web resource to people who want to get Japanese legal information through the web.
