Why a foundation for women and girls?
Because programs that serve everyone do not address the special needs of women and girls.
The Michigan Women's Foundation was created in 1986 to respond to these issues and to create a permanent financial resource for programs helping Michiganžs women and girls. With donations from over a thousand supporters, we find and fund creative solutions which confronts the issues of poverty, violence, and discrimination that women face.
MWF funds
nonprofits serving women and girls throughout the state of Michigan. MWF has granted over $1.2 million to more than 100 organizations. We fund domestic violence shelters, Girl Scout councils, women's economic development organizations, YWCAs, and various other groups. The programs we fund include job skills training, expanded educational opportunities, substance abuse counseling, conflict resolution skills, and other efforts to empower women and girls.
MWF advises
women's grassroots organizations. We are a technical assistance resource for Michigan women's groups. Through on-site consultations and training workshops, we help women's groups organize, raise funds, and communicate. Central to our mission is the continued existence and success of these organizations, which support women and girls on a day-to-day basis.
MWF educates
grantmakers and other groups, encouraging them to devote more resources to women and girls. MWF publishes research reports, such as its report on the status of Michigan women's health, and forms collaborations to address critical needs. A recent partnership helps Michigan companies and non-profits search for women candidates for their boards of directors. Together with Crain's Detroit Business and Executive Recruiters International, and with support from several other organizations, MWF has created the Michigan Women's Directory, a database of prominent women, to increase women's representation on boards.
Small dollars make big change
Most MWF grants range in size from $1,000 to $10,000, based on the knowledge that small grants can make a real difference in grassroots innovation. We support projects that might not otherwise receive funding from more traditional sources.
Each grant we make improves the economic and personal self-sufficiency of women and girls. Grants are awarded once a year, and funding proposals are reviewed by an 18-member volunteer Grants Distribution Committee. Our Funding priority goes to programs that address the following needs:
The Women's Health Funding Initiative , a program which funds projects which address health barriers to women's and girl's economic well-being.
The Kent County Girls Community Initiative , a grantmaking program which targets the needs of girls and young women in Kent County. A committee of 14 teen-aged girls makes funding decisions.
Most MWF support comes from almost 2,000 individual donors statewide. Additional funding is provided by foundations and corporations, including the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation, the Chrysler Corporation Fund, Ford Motor Company, the General Motors Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Metro Health Foundation, the Michigan Department of Public Health and the C.S. Mott Foundation.
