Annual Report, FY1988/89
We are pleased to report our volunteers, donors, Trustees, and our
many other MWF friends that FY 88/89 was a year filled with new
accomplishments as well as the culmination of a three year history
of important progress toward realizing our mission -- increasing
support for programs and projects that empower Michigan women and
girls. It was also a year that inspired hopes and dreams for the
Foundation's future.
Our Accomplishments...
- MWF has made 17 grants totalling $100,000 since 1987. These
grants were made to diverse women's organizations located all over
Michigan, who are providing critical and often creative programs to
women and girls.
- MWF has established the Management Assistance Program, with
over 40 women's organizations served so far. We help to build
strong, financially stable women's organizations by offering
training, consultation and technical assistance in management
issues ranging from board development to grant writing, form
effective leadership to developing a fundraising plan.
- MWF has initiated the Philanthropy and Women's Issues project.
This project seeks to increase the number of philanthropic dollars
that go to programs serving women and girls in Michigan by updating
other Michigan funders on their needs and the current level of
foundation and corporate giving to the programs who serve them.
- MWF has held two "Building Survival Skills" workshop series.
The series of workshops give individual women the basic money
management tools they need to build personal economic power, such
as goal-setting, budgeting, record-keeping, retirement income
planning and investing.
- MWF has built a base of 500+ donors. Our donors include both
organizations and individuals from all walks of life who recognize
the importance of investing in the economic future of women and
girls in Michigan.
- MWF has developed a Trustee and volunteer network. This
network includes hundreds of women -- and a number of good men --
who lend us their skills and energy to carrying out the goals and
objectives of the Foundation.
Our Hopes and Dreams...
- To go from one grant cycle a year to two. We hope to
implement an additional funding cycle each year and, thus, double
the opportunity we have for supporting important programs and
projects serving women and girls.
- To strengthen the Management Assistance Program and develop
full-time consulting and training. We hope to increase our
capacity for serving as a source of expertise and skill-building
for women's organizations in Michigan.
- To continue to provide information to other foundations and
serve as a resource and advocate for women's programs. We hope to
encourage other foundations, individuals and the corporate
community to increase their support of women's programs, by working
to increase their awareness of and concern for the needs of
Michigan women and girls.
- To broker relationships among women's organizations. WE hope
to strengthen the ties that bind women's organizations in Michigan
by producing a forum for the exchange of ideas, resources and
expertise.
- To develop an endowment. We hope to solidify our financial
base and establish ourselves as a credible and permanent fixture in
the Michigan giving community by setting up an MWF endowment
fund.
- To continue to seek involvement (as donors, volunteers,
Trustees) from people who care about women's issues,k as well as
diversity in our grants and among our donors, volunteers and
Trustees. We hope to attract an ever-increasing circle of diverse
individuals and organizations who support and benefit from the work
of the Foundation.
MWF's financial health is an important ingredient in achieving our
mission. The MWF Balance Sheet and Statement of Revenues, Expenses
and Changes in Fund Balance for FY 88/89 are also included in this
report. We will work hard to build an even stronger financial base
for the Foundation in FY 89/90, so that we can indeed realize our
hopes and dreams for the future.
The Michigan Women's Foundation is a unique organization. We are
not a private foundation but rather a special partnership of
donors, volunteers and women's nonprofit organizations from across
Michigan who are working to improve the lives of women and girls.
Thank you for being a partner in our past accomplishments and in
our exciting future.
