Grantseekers, fund raisers, and donors have begun using the Internet to communicate with each other and to participate in discussion groups on a variety of work-related topics. All one needs to gain access to the Internet is a computer, a modem, and a link to the Internet through a college or university network or through a commercial online network.

People "subscribe" to an electronic discussion group by sending a message to a computer that runs the list. Once on the list, subscribers receive a copy of every message posted to it. They can send a question or comment of their own to the list or to the individual subscribers.

Don't know where to begin? Here are a few of the lists that fund raisers are subscribing to:

ADVANCEMENT
Focuses on any and all aspects of the college or university advancement office. Since advancement properly encompasses such areas as alumni relations, fund development, asset and endowment management, public relations, etc., this forum is quite broad in scope.
  • In March 2008, Charity Channel rolled out a new Discussion Forum Web Page. According to the notice : "Colleagues who prefer email-based discussion lists can elect to receive forum postings by email, and reply by email, as before. Further, colleagues who prefer to log in to participate via an easy-to-use web-based forum system may now do so."
  • Email Method: Send an email message to Listserv@CharityChannel.com. The "subject" or "re" is ignored. In the body of the message, type: SUBSCRIBE ADVANCEMENT yourFirstname yourLastname (Example: SUBSCRIBE ADVANCEMENT Jane Doe)
  • If you have any difficulty subscribing, send an e-mail to List-Editors@CharityChannel.com, or telephone American Philanthropy Review (in the USA) at (714) 589-5938.

  • ANNUAL_FUND
As its name implies, Annual_Fund is an internet e-mail discussion list focusing on all aspects of the annual fund, a form of fund raising commonly employed by higher education, arts and cultural organizations, health care organizations, and others. Annual_Fund will be of interest to professionals working for and on behalf of such nonprofit organizations or NGOs anywhere in the world who are responsible for raising charitable contributions through the organization's annual fund operation. It will also be of interest to those who, while not full-time fund development professionals, are involved in any aspect of such fund raising. This form of fund raising is common in many countries, especially North America and Europe. Annual_Fund, therefore, is chartered as an international list, open to individuals from any country with an interest in the subject.
  • In March 2008, Charity Channel rolled out a new Discussion Forum Web Page. • BOARDS
This list focuses on all aspects of nonprofit/NGO governance, board issues such as board creation and function, board-member responsibility in fund raising, board-member liability and other legal issues involving board members, board policies, and so on. BOARDS should be of interest to any individual involved in any aspect of nonprofit management or governance, fund development, board development, and many other related topics. BOARDS, an international list, is open to individuals from any country with an interest in the topic.

  • CAPTALK
An e-mail discussion list dedicated to all aspects of the capital campaign. Few aspects of fund raising are more important to a nonprofit/NGO organization than the capital campaign. Fund development officers, board members, senior management, fund raising counsel and others are confronted with an array of daunting questions when considering or waging a capital campaign. A few:
  • When is a capital campaign appropriate (or inappropriate)?
  • What are the nuts and bolts of a capital campaign?
  • Who should lead it?
  • How long should it last?
  • Should there be a "quiet phase" before a "public phase"?
  • What should be its stated goal? Its unstated goal?
  • What do you do if the campaign is falling short of its goal?
  • Are there viable alternatives to the capital campaign?
  • How do planned giving, grant seeking, special events, annual fund programs, etc., figure in a capital campaign?
  • How do you avoid donor and public confusion from changes brought about by a capital campaign?
  • Can you legally and/or ethically use funds raised for one project on another project?
  • And more.
