FOUNDATION SIMPLIFIES COMMUNITY DONATIONS

Giving money to Lansing-area civic groups will be made easier by a new foundation that helps distribute donations.

After two years of planning and mounds of legal paperwork, the non- profit Capital Regional Community Foundation is open. Similar to the United Way, it will invest donations and distribute funds to Lansing-area groups, said interim executive director Mary Olson.

"This is a new concept in the Lansing area, although there are 37 similar funds in the state," she said. "It will offer a place where people can come who wish to give back to the community -- in their wills, bequests, donations or living wills."

The foundation will decrease the time, expense and paperwork of those who wish to contribute, she said.

Donors can specify which groups receive contributions, or the foundation's board of trustees will decide where money is needed.

About 10 to 12 percent of a donation will go to administrative costs, Olson said.

The group hopes to compliment other non-profit philanthropies in the area, rather than be a competitor.

The foundation has a five-year goal of $10 million and recently received its first bequest, she said.
