FIELD GUIDE TO NONPROFIT PROGRAM DESIGN, MARKETING, AND EVALUATION. Carter McNamara. Minneapolis, Minn. : Authenticity Consulting, 2003. 252pp. Main Library Stacks HG4027.65 .M363 2002
To effectively design a program, you must have clear understanding of the program's clients and their needs to be met by the program. That understanding comes from conducting an effective marketing analysis. To effectively advertise and promote a program, you must have clear understanding of the program's clients, their needs and their habits, along with the benefits of the program to the clients. To effectively evaluate a program, you must have clear understanding of the program's goals and intended outcomes, and integrate indicators of success into the program's design well before the program even starts operating. Thus, the activities of program design, marketing and evaluation are highly integrated and should be treated as such, ideally in one comprehensive publication (like this one), rather than across several. This guidebook provides clear, concise and comprehensive guidelines for all critical aspects of designing, marketing and evaluating a nonprofit program. Guidelines are written in an easy-to-implement style, resulting in a highly practical resource that can be referenced at any time during the life of a nonprofit program.

FINANCING AND ACQUIRING PARK AND RECREATION RESOURCES. John L. Crompton. Champaign, Il. : Human Kinetics, 1999. 535pp. Main Library Stacks SB486.F54 C76 1999
When John Crompton and Dennis Howard co-authored their classic book Financing, Managing and Marketing Recreation and Park Resources in 1979, they put the spotlight on a growing shortfall in park funding and discussed an array of innovative solutions. Twenty years later, continued budget cutbacks and additional service demands have made funding an even greater concern for park and recreation managers. Now Crompton has put every aspect of park and recreation financing into a comprehensive resource that will help today’s and tomorrow’s managers meet the daily challenge of "doing more with less."
Financing and Acquiring Park and Recreation Resources is not an abstract reference destined to fill space on a shelf, but a comprehensive source book filled with real and workable solutions. It examines the forces behind decreased public spending and presents a wide range of alternative funding methods being used to bridge the gap and pay for new facilities and programs. You’ll find information on everything from the traditional mechanisms of municipal bonds and property taxes to the evolving role of donations, volunteers, sponsorships, foundations, coproduction, and public-private alliances in funding park operations.
No other book covers so much information with such clarity and detail. Crompton has successfully rewritten the "bible" of financial problem solving for public park and recreation organizations. If there’s a way to cut costs, raise funds, form partnerships, or reevaluate assets to further the successful operation of park and recreation areas, you’ll find it in this book.

FORCES OF CHANGE : THE COMING CHALLENGES IN HOSPITAL PHILANTHROPY. Gary J. Hubbell. Falls Church, Va. : The Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, 2004. 46pp. Main Library Stacks RA971.3 .H83 2004
While some predict a coming "golden age of philanthropy", Gary J. Hubbell, senior strategist, Growth Design Corporation, in a manuscript entitled Forces of Change: The Coming Challenges in Hospital Philanthropy, published by The Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), presents a much less robust future for hospital philanthropy - especially for community hospitals. According to Hubbell, the growing commercialization of nonprofit hospitals, continuing evidence of civic disengagement, and generational characteristics are the leading forces of change that will intersect in unprecedented ways. These trends and others could lead to diminished returns on hospital fund raising.

She then discusses the most common barriers to organizational health-- including Founder's Syndrome, the search for financial security, and taking donors for granted.Along with tips and techniques, Klein presents the philosophical underpinnings for long-term commitment to social change work and the means to make it sustainable. Klein knows the difficulties of organizations that are understaffed and under-resourced and provides practical assistance -- almost a road map -- for organizations wanting a

FUNDRAISING IN TIMES OF CRISIS. Kim Klein. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass Publishers, 2004. xiv, 175pp. Main Library Stacks HV41.9.U5 K574 2004
Klein asserts that nonprofits are in a very unusual situation, probably of long duration, that can ultimately threaten their ability to carry out their programs. The economy has affected individuals and institutional givers' ability to donate; the war on terrorism has chilled the interest in giving to controversial causes; the growth of the nonprofit sector (creating greater competition), scandals, and "mission drift" have all contributed to unprecedented challenges in the new millennium. Klein provides guidance on pursuit of specific techniques for the next year, as well as longer-term strategies.

Daryl E. Ferguson, Mim Carlson, Mal Warwick. San Francisco, CA : Jossey-Bass Publishers, 2001. 2nd edition, 291pp. Main Library Stacks HV41.2 .F87 2002
Even before the atrocities of 9/11, the nonprofit world was in need of a single source of
pragmatic perspective and advice on the sometimes bewildering world of the Internet
— told not from a single author’s perspective, but from the viewpoint of the
acknowledged leaders in the nonprofit online world. Created to fill that gap, Fundraising on the
Internet has taken on central importance as nonprofit organizations large and small grapple
with the apparent sea change wrought by the events of.
In an interview in early November, two of its editors, Ted Hart of ePhilanthropyFoundation.Org and Nick Allen of donordigital.com, confirmed that now, more than ever, nonprofit managers need to understand both the big picture and enough of the details to integrate their organizations’ online presence with other facets of their development programs. Indeed, in a nod to the new realities, Hart indicated that a supplement is already in the works to cover the implications of 9/11 to online philanthropy.
What’s remarkable about this book is its breadth. I wouldn’t recommend that the reader read it from cover to cover (well, okay, I did, but I’m odd that way); rather, scan the various chapters and read what’s relevant to your organization. Interested in e-mail campaigns or e-newsletters? There’s a chapter on that. Challenged by managing donor records? There’s a chapter called "Managing Donor Data Online," by Jay B. Love, another called "ePhilanthropy and Donor Management Systems," by Shaun Sullivan, and yet another called "Faster, Cheaper, Better: Internet
Outsourcing to Boost Your Online Presence," by George Irish and Ken Weber.
The Internet is a visual medium, and the book does a good job in providing large, readable screen shots to illustrate the points of the various chapters. I like that. Okay, I do have a tiny quibble: the screen shots are black and white and therefore miss some of the impact that colorful Web pages provide. But, on the other hand, the book is priced affordably at $29 U.S. and $40.50 Canadian — which brings it within reach of thousands of nonprofit professionals. At that price, so what if the screenshots are black and white? Heck, I can always use my Web browser if I want to see the color versions anyway.
To give you a full idea of the subjects covered and their usefulness to any nonprofit serious about its online presence, here are the chapter titles:
