The organization Women in Defense sponsors the HORIZONS scholarship award to encourage women to pursue careers related to U.S. national security interests. Applicants should be pursuing studies in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, business, law, international relations, political science, operations research or economics (or another discipline if you can demonstrate its relevance to a career in national security or defense). Both graduate and undergraduate students may apply; undergraduates must have attained at least junior status (60 credits). IBM Research Internship for Black, Hispanic, and Native American Students

IBM sponsors a research internship program for under-represented minorities. The goal is to encourage under-represented sophomore and junior minority students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering. The internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long at one of three IBM research locations (San Jose, CA, Austin, TX, or Yorktown Heights, NY), and include in addition a $2,500 grant, plus the opportunity to work with an IBM mentor. The Watson lab has a full range of research, as does the Almaden lab, and the Austin lab focuses on software and systems. Research areas of the internship are individually chosen so as to optimize the match between the skills and interests of the student, and the ongoing research programs of the laboratory.

Applicants should have research experience in one of the following fields: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, or in related engineering fields such as Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical.
NPSC welcomes applications from all qualified students, with continued emphasis on the recruiting of underrepresented minorities and women. Applicants must be graduating seniors with at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA, in their first year of a graduate program pursuing a Ph.D., be in a terminal master's program, or be returning from the workforce with no more than a master's degree. Persons who already possess a doctoral degree in any field are ineligible.
The NPSC awards up to $16,000 stipends for students aspiring to earn a doctoral degree the physical sciences, biochemistry, computer science, and related fields of science and engineering. The initial phase of the Traditional Fellowship covers the first two or three years of graduate school, depending on the employer who sponsors the fellowship, with the possibility of continuation for several more years providing all the conditions of the fellowship continue to be met. The maximum total duration is six years.

Raise The Nation celebrates independence through education by awarding grants and scholarships to single parent women and their children. The majority of single parent women work full time, while 45.5% work multiple jobs just to meet basic needs. Childcare costs are often 1/3 of a woman’s weekly pay and if she has two children the cost nearly doubles. In spite of these difficulties many single parent women return to school while working full time. The greatest hardship for these very determined women is finding the extra money for tuition, books, and childcare. In addition, student loan repayment is difficult, often amounting to the equivalent of a monthly new car or mortgage payment. Raise The Nation provides money directly to the Colleges, Universities and student loan providers for the purpose of helping these women complete and pay for their education. We also offer assistance for childcare, books and other basic needs. Scholarships are awarded twice a year and distribution of funds is directly related to our success in fundraising.

Travel Grants Available for Women through the National Science Foundation and the Association for Women in Mathematics

The objective of the NSF-AWM Travel Grants program is to enable women mathematicians to attend research conferences in their field, thereby providing a valuable opportunity to advance their research activities and their visibility in the research community. A maximum of $1,000 for domestic travel and $2,000 for foreign travel will be made available, with funds provided by the Division of Mathematical Sciences of the National Science Foundation. Grants will only be awarded for research conferences in an area supported by DMS. This includes certain areas of statistics but excludes most mathematics education as well as the history of mathematics. Applicants must be women holding a doctorate (or with equivalent experience) and a work address in the U.S. Mentoring travel grants are also awarded to help younger women develop a long-term working and mentoring relationship with a senior mathematician. The relationship should help the junior mathematician to establish her research program and eventually receive tenure. AWM expects to award up to six grants, in amounts of $4,000 each. Each grant will fund travel and other expenses for an untenured woman mathematician to travel to an institute or a department to do research with a specified individual for one month. WREI awards annual fellowships to a select number of graduate students with a proven commitment to equity for women. WREI Fellows gain practical policymaking experience and graduate credit as they work from January to August as Congressional legislative aides in Washington, D.C. Fellows receive stipends for tuition and living expenses. ELIGIBILITY: Only students who are currently in, or have recently completed, a graduate or professional-degree program at an accredited institution in the United States are eligible. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic competence as well as their demonstrated interest in the public policy process. They are expected to be articulate and adaptable and to have strong writing skills. FUNDING: Each fellow receives a monthly stipend of $1,300. WREI will also reimburse Fellows up to a maximum of $1,500 over two semesters ($750 per semester) for the cost of credit hours at their home institutions. An additional sum of $500 is provided for the purchase of health insurance.

The Zonta International Foundation established this award to honor famed air pioneer and Zontian, Amelia Earhart. The award is for women who have completed at least one year of graduate study in an area of science or engineering which is closely related to advanced studies in the aerospace-related sciences. While often thought of as award just for those studying aerospace sciences, awards have been made for graduate study in such fields as aerospace, engineering, astronomy, astrophysics, biomedical engineering, computer science, fluid mechanics, geological oceanography, meteorology, molecular biology and space medicine. Therefore, this grant supports a wider range of study than commonly thought. Thirty-three to thirty-five grants of $6000 each are made yearly.

FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current.
