Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowships
http://www.hertzfoundation.org/
The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowships are based on merit (not need) consisting of a cost-of-education allowance in lieu of tuition and fees and a personal stipend of $25,000 over the nine-month academic year. The fellowship supports academic versus professional graduate study, e.g., study for the Ph.D. Only those studying the physical sciences whose work will have real world applications versus being purely theoretical are eligible. This focus, however, may be broadly construed. The official description of the fellowship also talks about the goals of the Hertz Foundation fellowship as being related to "the enhancement of the defense potential and technological stature of the United States." Again, this should not be taken literally. Students with an excellent academic credentials, who plan to study in some are of the physical sciences, should definitely consider applying for the Hertz. The Hertz offers very generous support. Fellows must attend one of the Foundations tenable schools. Michigan State University students are eligible to apply but should expect to attend one of the three dozen of the schools where students usually go to study.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship
    http://www.asee.org/ndseg/
The Department of Defense (DoD) is committed to increasing the number and quality of our nation's scientists and engineers. Toward that end, the DoD annually supports approximately 8,000 graduate students in fields important to national defense needs. The DoD's support is evidenced in a number of ways. First and foremost, the DoD funds thousands of graduate students, who are members of research teams, through contracts and grants. Selected by research faculty, the students engage in fundamental studies under the leadership of a senior researcher while earning advanced degrees. These students are generally wholly supported by their DoD grant or contract. Another important mechanism for DoD support of graduate students is through portable fellowships awarded to U.S. citizens or nationals following a competition each year. These fellowships allow the recipients to pursue their graduate studies at whichever U.S. institution they choose to attend. One of these is the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship, which is highly competitive and confers high honors upon its recipients. The DoD has awarded approximately 2,200 NDSEG fellowships since the program's inception 17 years ago.

The award is for women who have completed at least one year of graduate study in an area of science or engineering which is closely related to advanced studies in the aerospace-related sciences. While often thought of as award just for those studying aerospace sciences, awards have been made for graduate study in such fields as aerospace, engineering, astronomy, astrophysics, biomedical engineering, computer science, fluid mechanics, geological oceanography, meteorology, molecular biology and space medicine. Therefore, this grant supports a wider range of study than commonly thought. Thirty-three to thirty-five grants of $6000 each are made yearly.
