The Henry Luce III Fellows in Theology program is designed to encourage high-quality research that promises both to contribute to theological inquiry and to provide leadership in theological scholarship. Since its inception in 1994, the program has funded intellectually rigorous research projects that emphasize the interdisciplinary character of theological scholarship and education, and address the needs of the academy, communities of faith, and the wider society. The fellowship enables each Fellow to conduct year-long research in one of several areas of theological inquiry.

Lilly Theological Research Grants

The Lilly Theological Research Grants program, inaugurated in 1996 and revised in 2001, is designed to enhance the skill and capacity of faculty in ATS schools as theological researchers and scholars. It supports research efforts of faculty, particularly at junior and non-tenured levels in order to nurture the development of their scholarship; seeks to enlarge the pool of faculty actively engaged as theological researchers; works to increase knowledge about grant seeking and the craft of theological research; and nurtures the habit of research as an ongoing aspect of scholarly life. The ATS Lilly Theological Research Grants program has three components:
Faculty Fellowships will support up to five faculty members with awards of $30,000 each during an institutionally approved research leave of at least one full semester.
Theological Scholars Grants will provide as many as ten grants of up to $12,000 each for research apart from a formal research leave.
Research Expense Grants will give up to $5,000 each to as many as ten scholars for direct research expenses.

For over twenty years, the annual J.K. Russell Fellowship in Religion and Science has enabled senior scholars in the field of theology and the natural sciences to visit the Graduate Theological Union and CTNS and to conduct research, teach courses, and present public lectures. These visiting scholars and research fellows often contribute to CTNS publications as well as give a presentation to a CTNS/GTU graduate course. The annual J.K. Russell Fellowship in Religion and Science was created in memory of John K. Russell (1896-1958). Mr. Russell, born of Italian immigrants, was an industrial engineer and humanitarian.

Helena B. Cobb Scholarship Grant

The Helena B. Cobb Scholarship Program emphasizes the importance of educational training beyond the high school level whether that training is higher education at a college, university, or vocational-technical school. The program was named for the first Vice President of the Council, Helena B. Cobb, who was an educator. The program is divided into two categories:
Category 1 – The Helena B. Cobb Annual Scholarship. A scholarship of $100.00 is given annually to approved applicants for a maximum of four years. Applicants must apply/reapply each year. Stipends are also given to our theology students and donations are made periodically to our CME Instutions of higher learning.
Category 2 – The Helena B. Cobb Four-Year Higher Education Grant. This scholarship is awarded each quadrennial. Presently, six $ 4,000 and four $1,000 scholarships are given. Applicants are chosen through a four-year progressive competitive system from the local to Episcopal levels. In 1975, the first four-year higher education scholarship was granted.
Any member of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church who has graduated from high school and who is enrolled in a college, university, or vocational-technical school may receive help from the Helena B. Cobb Fund provided that person makes application and that application is approved.

The library collection is particularly rich in the following areas: Catholic newspapers, history of midwestern Catholicism, Catholic literature, and history of Catholicism in the United States. Manuscripts of historical personages, records of twentieth century Catholic organizations, reports of European missionary societies, and much more material related to the American Catholic community are held in the archives.

The Louisville Institute seeks to enrich the religious life of American Christians and to encourage the revitalization of their institutions, by bringing together those who lead religious institutions with those who study them, so that the work of each might stimulate and inform the other. Founded in 1990, the Louisville Institute is a Lilly Endowment program for the study of American religion based at Louisville Seminary. The Louisville Institute offers funding through six specialized grant programs, designed to address different issues and to assist different groups of institutions and individuals.
The Pastoral Leadership Grant Program supports research and reflection by pastors and academics on the conditions of contemporary Christian ministry, the nature of contemporary pastoral leadership in light of those conditions, and the character of pastoral excellence. The Pastoral Leadership Grant Program seeks to:
Identify pastors and academics already working on these issues,
Support first-rate research about the nature and practice of pastoral leadership so that the work of both new and seasoned leaders might be strengthened, and
Generate a broader conversation in the American academic and church communities about the nature of and challenges to pastoral leadership in the contemporary world.

Since its formation in 1960, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture has granted fellowships to over 300 scholars to encourage research, publication and teaching in the various disciplines of Jewish Studies. Through its Jewish Endowment for the Arts and Humanities, the NFJC continues to provide fellowships for doctoral students in Jewish Studies as well as a grant for the publication of a dissertation by an academic press. The NFJC also sponsors the annual Jewish Cultural Achievement Awards in Scholarship, and publishes articles on trends in Jewish studies.

FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current. Foundations Boost Funding for Study of Religion
Scholars at universities across the United States are placing new emphasis on the social impact of religion, the Los Angeles Times reports. According to the Times, a long-standing academic bias against religion had caused social researchers to overlook its role in American life. Now, however, the subject is increasingly the focus of study within departments of sociology, political science, and international relations. Interest in the study of religion is being driven by a number of factors, the Times reports, including renewed interest in spirituality on the part of aging baby boomers and recent political support for faith-based initiatives. As part of this trend, a growing number of mainstream foundations are providing money for religious research. The Ford Foundation, one of America's largest foundations, has awarded roughly 50 grants totaling $10.5 million over the past several years through a religious program created in 1997. Other major funders include the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment and the Philadelphia-based Pew Charitable Trusts, which is funding a multimillion-dollar initiative to create 10 academic "Centers of Excellence" to study the intersection between religion and a range of contemporary issues. Gift of Hope: 21st Century Scholars Program

This program is intended to provide $1,000 scholarship awards to 1,000 United Methodist students each year over a four year period. The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry is committed to preparing a new generation of Christian leaders. This scholarship will provide support to students who are already in leadership in the church and will continue to be leaders once they graduate.
