American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest

Scholarship awards are presented to the three finalists in the Final Round of the National Contest as follows:
1st place -- $18,000; 2nd place --$16,000; 3rd place -- $14,000. Each Department (State) winner who is certified into and participates in the first round of the National Contest will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Each first round winner who advances to and participates in the second round, but does not advance to the Final Round, will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship to pursue education beyond high school.
The scholarships awarded by the National Organization of The American Legion to the three finalists, to the Department winners, and to the first round winners who are eliminated during the second round of competition may be used to attend any college or university in the United States. Funds for the scholarships awarded by the National Organization are provided by The American Legion Life Insurance Fund.
In addition to the scholarships award by the National Organization, there are several hundred scholarships awarded at the discretion of the intermediate organizations, to participants at Post, District or County, and Department levels of competition.

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Nominees, who may range in age from 8 to 18 years old, must have been the prime mover of a service activity, and demonstrated positive spirit and high moral purpose in accomplishing their goals. Nominees must be nominated by responsible adults who have solid knowledge of the young person's heroic activities, and who are not related to the nominee.

The H.O.P.E. Scholarship Program is a crime prevention and education initiative in cooperation with the Lansing Police Department, Lansing Community College, Michigan State University, Lansing School District, and City of Lansing in cooperation with local businesses and private citizens. The H.O.P.E. Scholarship Program offers Lansing School District youth an opportunity for a college education and a brighter future. Students are initiated into the program as sixth graders. Students promise to finish high school in exchange for two free years of tuition at Lansing Community College. The students are chosen by their school, based on their ability to utilize the program.

Formerly known as the President's Student Service Scholarships, close to 20,000 scholarships have been awarded to students who have strengthened communities by demonstrating outstanding leadership in service. Students in every state in the nation as well as the District of Columbia have been recognized. Each high school in the country may select up to two students to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their outstanding leadership in service to the community. The student(s) selected may be either a high school junior(s) or senior(s). With funds appropriated by Congress, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 for each scholarship, which must be matched with $500 secured by the school from the community.

The Walt Disney Company and Youth Service America are excited to announce grants of up to $500 to support youth-led service projects. These grants support youth (ages 5-14) in planning and implementing service projects in their community. Teachers, older youth (15-25), and youth-serving organizations are also eligible to apply, if they engage younger youth (5-14) in planning and implementing the project. A significant part of the service must take place on GYSD 2008, April 25-27. We encourage youth to address important issues such as climate change, malaria or other diseases, human rights, literacy, or others. Applicants can use the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a reference.

Do Something is a national nonprofit organization that inspires young people to believe that change is possible, and trains, funds, and mobilizes them to be leaders who measurably strengthen their communities. The Do Something BRICK Awards honors 6 outstanding leaders age 18 and under and 3 outstanding leaders age 19-25 who use their talents to take action that measurably strengthens their local communities in the areas of community building, health, or the environment. BRICK winners are leaders who have identified and realized solutions to problems facing local communities across America. In general, school clubs, Eagle Scout projects, Gold Awards and the like do not fit the criteria for a BRICK winner. This award is for social entrepreneurs rather than activities or fundraisers. Eligible applicants must be both a citizen of the United States or its territories, and 25 years old or younger on the date of the BRICK Awards Gala for the year for which application is being made. Each award includes a $5,000 higher education scholarship, a $5,000 grant for continued community work, pro bono services, and other support and recognition. Education Freedom Fund (EFF) is a non-profit foundation established to provide scholarships to children of low-income families to attend K-8 schools of their choice. In partnership with the Children's Scholarship Fund of Detroit and Pathways Plus, the EFF provides scholarship grants an average of $1,000 per year, per child, for four years to low-income families to help their children attend private religious, secular, and even cross-district public schools in Michigan. The program recognizes youth, ages 6 to 18, for outstanding service to the community, with national finalists receiving $5,000 for their post-secondary education. Nominees must be between the ages of 6 and 18, and will be judged in two age groups: 6-11 and 12-18. Two winners will be selected through each Kohl's store — one from each age range — to receive a $50 gift card. Those winners will go on to compete for one of ninety-four regional scholarships worth $1,000 each. Regional winners will compete for one of ten national scholarships worth $5,000 each. In addition, Kohl's will contribute $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on behalf of each national winner.

Team America Rocketry Challenge

The first national model rocket competition for U.S. high school and junior high school students.
Five winning student teams will share a total prize pool of $59,000. In addition, three of the top ten teams are eligible to win $2500 grants, including travel expenses, to launch an advanced rocket with NASA, and attend Space Camp. Each of the top 25 teams' schools will be invited to send one teacher on an all expenses paid trip to attend an advanced NASA rocketry workshop, meet with NASA scientists and engineers, and tour the Marshall Space Flight Center. This event is sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association and the National Association of Rocketry. Our partners include NASA, the US Airforce and numerous educational organizations.
We challenge you to design, build, and fly a model rocket carrying two raw eggs as close as possible to 1500 feet. The top 100 teams will compete in a fly-off in Northern Virginia in May 2003. The deadline to enter the contest is November 15, 2002.

The Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation created the Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children’s Tylenol National Child Care Teacher Awards to acknowledge the critical role of child care teachers in providing quality early care and education. Child care teachers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are invited to apply. Fifty teachers are selected for their commitment and dedication to the children they serve. Of the top ten recipients, one is selected to receive the Helene Marks Award. As part of the application process, each applicant is asked to design an enhancement project for the children in their classroom illustrating the educational, social, and emotional benefits from the project. Award recipients receive $1,000 each — $500 for the teacher's personal use, and $500 to implement the project. The Helene Marks Award, which includes an additional $1,000, is presented to the child care teacher who is selected from among the top ten applicants of the National Child Care Teacher Awards. Applicants must be teachers of infant, toddler, or preschool age children, and must be employed in a home, group, or center-based program that is fully compliant with local and state regulations for operating child care programs.
