The Freedom Forum (http://www.freedomforum.org/), the American Society of Newspaper Editors (http://www.asne.org/), and the Associated Press Managing Editors (http://www.apme.com/) have announced an initiative to increase both the number and percentage of journalists of color working at U.S. daily newspapers with fewer than 75,000 readers. Through this partnership, the Freedom Forum will fund up to 50 two-year fellowships of $20,000 each to supplement salaries for journalists of color who bring their talents to newspapers in the targeted circulation range and who participate in fellowship activities beyond their newsroom roles. Newspapers seeking to participate must demonstrate that hiring a fellow will increase the racial diversity of their newsrooms in both percentage and number of minority professionals. The German Marshall Fund (GMF) began offering Journalism Fellowships in 1999 to expand the quantity and quality of European issues covered in the United States. The program's original objective, to increase the number of American journalists who report on European and transatlantic issues, has expanded to give Europeans an opportunity to travel to the United States and report back on U.S. issues. By providing financial support to journalists in this way, GMF hopes to contribute to better reporting on both sides of the Atlantic and to allow stories to be told that might not otherwise be covered. The grants range from $2,000 for a feature-length report to $25,000 for a book project, and include funds for European travel as appropriate. Applications are considered throughout the year.

Journalism Fellowships in Child and Family Policy

The Journalism Fellowships in Child and Family Policy are administered by the University of Maryland and supported by grants from the Foundation for Child Development and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. This new program aims to help professional journalists deepen their understanding of how public policy affects the lives of children and families. The program offers several options: six months of independent study, three months of work and study, a customized beat briefing, a week-long fellowship, and an immersion fellowship. Kiplinger Program for Public Affairs Journalists at The Ohio State University

In a world with too many stories to cover and too many deadlines to meet, the distinguished Kiplinger Program for Public Affairs journalism is offering talented, mid-career journalists are rare commodity: Time. The select few chosen for the program will be given six months to work on a public affairs project of their choice, as well as take a rich array of classes for university credit (with approval) toward a new or advanced degree. They may also mentor aspiring journalists at the award-winning college newspaper, The Lantern.
Successful applicants will begin the program, housed in the ultra modern Page Hall in the hub of campus, in January. For their six-month participation, they will receive a $20,000 stipend plus medical benefits and free tuition (with approval). Upon completion, Fellows will receive a Certificate in Public Affairs Journalism from the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy, as well as a transcript reflecting credit for coursework.
Among other requirements, applicants must have: (1) At least five years of journalism experience (2) A proposal for an independent work of public affairs journalism (3) A brief autobiography, resume and work samples

The National Sporting Library, a research institution specializing in horse and field sports, invites applications for research fellowships from university faculty in the humanities and social sciences, museum professionals, journalists, and independent scholars. Located 42 miles west of Washington, D.C., the Library holds an extensive collection of over 16,000 books, periodicals, manuscripts, and sporting art. The collection covers many aspects of equestrian and outdoor sports, including foxhunting, horse racing, polo, dressage, eventing, coaching, shooting, and angling. The F. Ambrose Rare Book Room contains over 4,000 rare volumes from the sixteenth through twentieth century in several languages. The fellowship covers approved projects of up to twelve months in duration, and applicants must demonstrate their need to use specific works in the collections. The Minority Fellowship program is designed to widen opportunities for minority professionals to enter or advance in newspaper management. Newspaper executives and journalism educators are asked to nominate candidates who demonstrate managerial potential. The supervisor's recommendation plays a key role in the selection of fellows. For that reason we suggest that all applicants work closely with their supervisor when preparing the application forms. The fellowships cover seminar registration fees, travel, meals and hotel expenses. Recipients attend newspaper-related seminars offered by the American Press Institute, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the National Association of Minority Media Executives and other academic and media organizations.

Phillips Foundation Journalism Fellowships

The Phillips Foundation (http://www.thephillipsfoundation.org/) awards $50,000 full-time fellowships and $25,000 part-time fellowships to working journalists with less than five years of professional experience in print journalism. The full-time fellowships include a $40,000 fellowship grant and up to $10,000 for expenses. The part-time fellowships consist of a $20,000 grant and up to $5,000 for expenses. Winners of the 2001 fellowships will undertake and complete a one-year project of their choice focused on journalism supportive of American culture and a free society. Finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C., in the spring for interviews with the judges, and the winners will be announced at an awards dinner at the National Press Club. The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting funds international travel costs associated with reporting projects on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream American media. The amount of individual travel grants will depend on the specific project and detailed budget planning. Most awards fall in the range of $3,000 to $10,000 but depending on project specifics may be as much as $20,000. Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism (Ted)

The Center for Environmental Journalism, an initiative of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder, offers the Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism to help provide professional journalists with the knowledge necessary to cover the environment more effectively and enrich the public's understanding of this subject. During the nine-month program, Scripps fellows audit classes, conduct in-depth research, and reflect on critical questions without the pressure of deadlines. Through seminars and field trips, the program brings participants together with leading environmental specialists. The fellowships cover tuition and fees. In addition, a $47,000 stipend will be paid for the 2008-09 academic year. Five Ted Scripps Fellowships are awarded each year. The program is open to all full-time U.S. print or broadcast journalists interested in deepening and broadening their knowledge of environmental issues. Prior experience in covering the environment is not required.

The Soros Justice Media Fellowships support dynamic journalists and documentarians working in print, radio, photography, film and video to improve the quality of media coverage of issues at the core of the U.S. Justice Fund’s criminal justice priorities. The program intends to mitigate the time, space, and market constraints that often discourage journalists from pursuing in-depth stories. Media Fellowships are one year in duration and support research, writing, photography, radio production, and film and video post-production and dissemination. Fellows are expected to make their projects the major focus of their work during the term of the fellowship.

FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current.
