Beginning in 2001, the African Studies Center (ASC) and the Women in International Development Program (MSU-WID), in cooperation with the Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID), are offering Compton Peace Fellowships to students from Sub-Saharan Africa to support their dissertation field research in Africa. This program is an element of the MSU African Higher Education Renaissance Initiative (AHERI). These dissertation fellowship awards are made possible by a grant from the Compton Foundation through its Peace Fellowship Program for addressing peace, conflict resolution, and security in Africa. Open to undergraduate and graduate students, one award is offered to an international student and one to an American student each year who make significant contributions to the enhancement of international communication, understanding and cooperation at MSU. International Student Groups Funding

International Studies and Programs (ISP) would like to financially support international student programming at Michigan State University. Although the amount of funding is limited, we would like to encourage the student groups to apply for the funding to support their events. The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) administers these funds on behalf of ISP. OISS encourages international student organizations to share their culture as a way to contribute to the internationalization of MSU and the Greater Lansing community.

International Student Mandela Fellowship Program

The award is provided to a graduate student/junior faculty or professional from South Africa. Candidates are nominated by the MSU department recommending admission. First preference will be given to those applicants applying to come to MSU for the first time and from home institutions with linkage agreements with MSU who also have matching support from their home institution. This award is intended to encourage MSU African students (preference is given to women) to study at MSU and in turn make a contribution to the development of their country. Funds are available for supporting costs such as tuition, research, dissertation writing, family expenses, and partial support for attending professional conferences. At least two awards are given annually of up to $1,000. Applicants should have a temporary Visa and must describe the factors which suggest the likelihood of their returning to their home country. The application deadline is approximately April 15th of each year.

Michigan State University faculty and doctoral students are invited to apply for MSU-CIBER grants to support professional development, research, and curricular activities that are of importance to global competitiveness of U.S. firms. MSU-CIBER operates on a monthly review cycle, and proposals may be submitted at any time. As a policy, MSU-CIBER supports scholarly activities that have a significant international dimension. This includes presentations at both domestic and international conferences, where the paper/research incorporates a clear international component. Grantees are required to provide a written report on the financial and academic aspects of their activity upon return, which may be published in the Views section of globalEDGETM, our global business knowledge portal.

MSU Jewish Studies will work with eligible students to help secure scholarship funding. Jewish Studies administers the Julie and Ed Levy Jr. Student Leadership Scholarships for Study in Israel ($2000 summer scholarships) and the Ed and Dot Slade Israel Study Scholarships ($1500 summer scholarships). It also administers additional funds for Israel scholarships. These scholarships are available to Jewish and non-Jewish students. Panhellenic Scholarship and Sorority Scholarships
Overseas Study and the Panhellenic Council award two scholarships which include a grant of $100 and a fifteen day Eurail pass to assist women enrolled in MSU Overseas Study Programs. The Scholarships assist MSU Panhellenic and sorority women whose education and professional goals are best fulfilled by a study abroad. Predissertation International Travel Awards

Applications are being solicited for the 2008 Predissertation International Travel Awards of up to $5000. These awards are designed to provide funds for MSU Ph.D. candidates in the predissertation stage in the Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), Arts and Letters (CAL), Education (ED), and Social Science (SSC) for travel outside of the United States during one or more of these semesters: Summer 2008, Fall 2008, and Spring 2009. This awards program is one of only a few that will support predissertation research. International Studies and Programs provides 80% of the award from Quality Funds provided by the Provost for 2006-2010 and your college provides 20%. Walker Hill International Scholarship

The Walker Hill International Scholarship and Research Support Program supports MSU doctoral students at the pre-dissertation research stage of their programs. It provides support funds for pre-dissertation visits to the site of the doctoral research in a country outside the United States. The award is named in honor of Dr. Walker H. Hill, a retired professor in the College of Education whose international involvements included international research and consultantships, particularly in India, and service as foreign student counselor and admissions officer for the College.
