Reality check! A slew of businesses have popped up to help match students with internships, charging hundreds to thousands of dollars to help them write resumes, identify potential employers and find summer housing. About three-fourths of all college students have had internships or some type of professional work experience by the time they graduate, says Phil Gardner, director of Michigan State’s Collegiate Employment Research Institute. But students shouldn’t pay to find an internship, he said, because most universities have career centers where students can search for free. Source : Companies match students with internships, MSNBC, March 6, 2007.

U.S. Department of State Student Internship Programs
http://www.careers.state.gov/student/programs/student_internships.html
What could a student internship mean to you at the U.S. Department of State? It's an opportunity for you to get an inside look at the different types of positions and responsibilities available in foreign affairs. Think of it as taking a career test ride before you actually have to decide what you are going to do with your life. You can also gain valuable work experience that will help you in virtually every endeavor, whether you choose to work in government or in the private sector. Then there's the added benefit of feeling good about knowing you are really doing something worthwhile for your nation. At the U.S. Department of State, we like to say we're the face of America to the world. As an intern, you will be, too. Some of our students work in Washington, DC, and others have the opportunity to work at an embassy overseas. Positions are both paid and unpaid, and many are available during spring, summer or fall.

First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current.
