Under BJS sponsorship, Visiting Fellows research criminal justice topics of their choice. While in Washington they have office space at BJS, interact with BJS staff and other researchers, and have access to a rich array of data sets and software. The Fellows program is open to senior-level social science researchers who have published extensive work on crime-related subjects. Some Fellows remain at BJS for their entire project; others make shorter visits. At the close of a project, a Fellow submits a research report summarizing the results and policy implications. Clinton County Sheriff's Office
The Tom Kangas Memorial Law Enforcement Scholarship is available to any student from Clinton County who will attend Lansing Community College in a public service program including criminal justice, health careers and fire science. The scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 in tuition credit.
The Clinton County Sheriff's Office Scholarship for Criminal Justice Careers follows the same criteria as the Tom Kangas scholarship. Applications may be picked up at the Sheriff's Office or at any high school in Clinton County.

COPS scholarships provide financial assistance to surviving children under the age of 30 and to surviving spouses of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, according to Federal government criteria, who wish to pursue a course of study beyond high school. Scholarships are not awarded for post-graduate study. Scholarships are not awarded to survivors who are entitled to a tuition-free education as a state death benefit. Applicants seeking financial assistance for education purposes are limited to the receipt of not more than $1,500 per semester, and total scholarship awards shall not exceed $12,000 maximum lifetime.

Over the years the Foundation has distributed three and half million dollars to students and certain lump sums to deserving universities and colleges. The Foundation distributes approximately one hundred thousand dollars annually.

Michigan State Police Troopers Assistance Fund

Since 2000, the Assistance Fund has made over $250,000 in benevolent contributions and donations, the primary focus being the awarding of scholarships. Each year the Assistance Fund awards twenty $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Michigan that are going on to continue their education at a university, college, or accredited trade school. The Assistance Fund also purchases automated external defibrillators (AED's) and donates them to groups and organizations that have a need for them, but could otherwise not afford to purchase them on their own. Lastly, the Assistance Fund provides monetary donations to other recognized charities such as the American Red Cross, the United States Marine Corp Toys for Tots Program, and the Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors, just to name a few.

Police Officer and Fire Fighters Survivors Tuition Act

Public Act 195 of 1996, provides for the waiver of tuition at public community and junior colleges and state universities for the surviving spouse and children of Michigan police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. The program is intended to provide an educational benefit to the spouse and children of police officers and firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities and the citizens of Michigan.
Beginning with the academic year 1996/9, tuition will be waived for eligible survivors enrolled in classes leading to a certificate or undergraduate degree. Persons wishing to participate in this program must submit an application to the Department of State Police prior to the start of the academic year. The Act has specific eligibility requirements; therefore, potential applicants are encouraged to read this information carefully before applying.

Women in Law Enforcement
Scholarship Program

Female college students planning to pursue careers in federal law enforcement can apply for scholarships awarded by Women in Federal Law Enforcement, a professional organization dedicated to promoting gender equity within the field. Scholarships are valued at $2,000 and may be renewed depending upon the organization's future funding. Women in Law Enforcement scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, commitment to community service, and professional potential. Full-time students majoring in criminal justice or related disciples are eligible to apply if they have completed at least one year of college coursework. An essay, transcripts, and letter of recommendation must be submitted with the completed application.

If you have access to the world wide web and are willing to fill in the online forms, this service promises a free customized list of financial aid sources. FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current.
