College Television Awards

The College Television Awards is a major TV Academy Foundation competition which recognizes excellence in college student film/video productions. It is national in scope, accepting entries each year from scores of colleges and universities. The entire program, including $24,500 in cash prizes, is sponsored by the Academy Foundation. First place winners receive $2,000, second place winners receive $1,000, and third place winners receive $500. (We no longer give regional awards.) The KodakWorldwide Student Program in cooperation with the Academypresents EastmanProduct Grants of$2,000 of film stock to the first place winner in each category and $1,000 of film stock to the second place winner in each category. In addition, a first or second place winner whose work best represents a humanitarian concern will be awarded an additional $4,000 known as "The Bricker Family College Award." All animation awards are sponsored by the Walter Lantz Foundation. Categories include: Comedy, Drama, Music Programs, Documentary,
Newscasts,Magazine Shows,Animation: Traditional, Animation: Non-Traditional (computer-generated), and Children's Programs (New Category).

The Foundations are interested in public television as an educational medium. Grants primarily provide partial support for major educational series assured of national airing by PBS. Consideration will also be given from time to time to single stand-alone programs of exceptional merit; however, Trustees prefer series with lasting educational value. The contribution to students in grades K-12, higher and continuing education is a consideration in evaluating competing proposals. Children's series are of particular interest. Consideration also will be given to innovative uses of public television (including online efforts) to enhance educational outreach in schools and communities. Proposals for "capstone" grants which assure completion of production funding are preferred. Initial research and pre-production funding are seldom supported. Neither multi-year nor annual funding of continuing series are normally considered. Recent "capstone" production grants have ranged from $100,000 to $500,000.

MANAA is the only organization of its kind dedicated to monitoring the positive and negative portrayals of Asian Pacific Americans in the media. MANAA recognizes the urgent need to fill the ranks of television and film with persons of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in decision-making positions as screenwriters, directors, producers, and studio executives. We are looking to award students who have a strong desire to advance a positive and enlightened understanding of the Asian Pacific American experience in the mainstream media. Through this category the National Endowment for the Arts seeks to make the excellence and diversity of the arts widely available to the American public through nationally distributed television and radio programs. Grants are available to support the development, production, and national distribution of radio and television programs on the arts. Priority will be given to artistically excellent programs that have the potential to reach a significant national audience, regardless of the size or geographic location of the applicant organization. Only programs of artistic excellence and merit, in terms of both the media production and the subject, will be funded. Projects may include high profile multi-part television and radio series, single documentaries, performance programs, or arts segments for use within an existing series. Programs may deal with any art form (e.g., visual arts, music, dance, literature, design, theater, musical theater, opera, film/video/audio art, folk & traditional arts). Programs targeted to children and youth also are welcome. All phases of a project -- research and development, production, completion and distribution costs -- are eligible for support. We welcome proposals that include ancillary activities that are intended to increase public knowledge, understanding, and access to the arts. Such activities might include the use of related radio and television programming; interactive Web sites; CD-ROM or other digital applications; educational material; collaborations with arts organizations, educators, and community groups; video/audio distribution to schools, libraries, and homes; and other public outreach activities.

The Abe Schechter Graduate Scholarship : Abe Schechter, a true pioneer of radio news, became the first VP of news for NBC. He began his career in newspapers, then moved to radio. During WWII, he became senior PR officer for General MacArthur. He eventually returned to NBC where he helped create the Today show. From there, he became part owner of the Mutual Broadcasting System. In the 1960s Schechter, along with RTNDF trustee George Glazer, founded a PR firm that was subsequently sold to Hill & Knowlton. Schechter and his wife died in a car accident in 1970, and this $2,000 scholarship was set up in his memory.
The Pete Wilson Scholarship : In memory of the late news anchor, Pete Wilson, ABC7, KGO-TV established The Pete Wilson Journalism Scholarship to be awarded annually by The Radio and Television News Directors Foundation (RTNDF.) The endowment will provide a $4,000 journalism scholarship in perpetuity in Pete Wilson’s name. It will be awarded to students from the San Francisco Bay Area pursuing a journalism undergraduate or graduate degree.

All scholarships are open to enrolled students (freshmen excluded) who are pursuing careers in radio and television news. Winners of the Ed Bradley, Carole Simpson, Lou & Carole Prato Sports Reporting and Mike Reynolds Scholarships also receive an expenses-paid trip to the RTNDA International Conference. Candidates must be a full-time college student whose career objective is electronic journalism and have at least one full year of college remaining. The Ed Bradley Scholarship:
Ed Bradley, 60 Minutes correspondent at CBS News, was once a teacher and made a switch to journalism. Bradley spoke of introducing deserving minority students to the communications career field and endowed this $10,000 annual award under the banner of RTNDF.
The Ken Kashiwahara Scholarship
Ken Kashiwahara, retired ABC News bureau chief and correspondent, developed this $2,500 annual award in 1998 for aspiring minority journalists. His 23-year career with ABC includes coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial, Ronald Reagan’s presidential bid and the Vietnam War.
Presidents’ $2,500 Scholarships
Two awards given in honor of former RTNDA Presidents Theodore Koop, Bruce Dennis, James McCulla, John Salisbury, Bruce Palmer, Dick Cheverton, Jim Byron, Ben Chatfield and John Hogan. Only currently enrolled college sophomores, juniors and seniors in good standing are eligible to apply.
The Carole Simpson Scholarship
Carole Simpson, ABC news senior correspondent, created this annual $2,000 award to encourage and help minority students overcome hurdles along their career path. Besides honoring those with talent, Carole is strict about her applicants meeting requirements in tenacity, determination and ambition to excel.
The Lou and Carole Prato Sports Reporting Scholarship
Lou Prato was RTNDA treasurer from 1981 to 2001 and continues to serve as secretary of RTNDF's Board of Trustees. Prato's friends and colleagues have endowed an RTNDF scholarship in honor of Lou and his wife, Carole. The scholarship will offer a $1,000 tuition grant to a deserving student who is planning a career as a sports reporter in television or radio. Applicants should have strong writing skills.
The Mike Reynolds Journalism Scholarship
Mike Reynolds, who died in 1988 of a brain tumor at age 45, was assignment editor and then managing editor at KCCI-TV in Des Moines, IA. Trustees of the fund to honor his memory require applicants for this award to be enrolled in journalism school and have good writing ability, excellent grades, a dedication to the news business, strong interest in pursuing a career in electronic journalism and a demonstrated need for financial assistance. Applicants should list media-related jobs held and contributions made to funding their own education. The recipient of the Mike Reynolds Journalism Scholarship will receive $1,000.
The George Foreman Tribute to Lyndon B. Johnson Scholarship
George Foreman, television commentator and former heavyweight champion, created this $6,000 annual scholarship to honor Lyndon B. Johnson. It was developed for a broadcast journalism student at the University of Texas-Austin.

If you have access to the world wide web and are willing to fill in the online forms, this service promises a free customized list of financial aid sources. FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current. FundSource is a tool designed to help behavioral and social scientists find research funding. It has been designed to be specific to behavioral and social science research, freely available with no subscription costs, and responsive to your needs and feedback. The FundSource database includes short descriptions; contact information; and web links to programs in federal agencies, foundations, and international organizations that fund behavioral and social science research.
Academic disciplines covered include: anthropology, archaeology, area/population studies, communication, criminology, economics, education, geography, linguistics/psychology, planning/policy studies, political science, psychology, public affairs, socio/legal studies, and sociology.
