Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research

The American Philosophical Society's Lewis and Clark Fund encourages exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation. Although applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as archeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology, linguistics, and paleontology, grants will not be restricted to these fields. Grants will be available to doctoral students. Postdoctoral fellows, master's degree candidates, and undergraduates are not eligible. The competition is open to U.S. residents wishing to carry out research anywhere in the world. Foreign applicants must either be based at a U.S. institution or plan to carry out their work in the United States. Grant amounts will depend on travel costs, but will ordinarily be in the range of several hundred dollars up to about $5,000 each. Grants are payable to the individual applicant. Budgets should be limited to travel and related expenses, including personal field equipment.

Provides grants for research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans, in the continental United States and Canada. Grants are not made for projects in archaeology, ethnography, psycholinguistics, or for the preparation of pedagogical materials. The committee distinguishes ethnohistory from contemporary ethnography as the study of cultures and culture change through time. The committee prefers to support the work of younger scholars who have received the doctorate. Applications are also accepted from graduate students for research on masters theses or doctoral dissertations. The fund's one-year grants are intended for such costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants' fees but not for the purchase of books or permanent equipment. The average award is for approximately $2,500; grants do not exceed $3,500 each.

Earthwatch Research Program

The fundamental purpose of Earthwatch Institute is to foster post-doctoral level research by scientists and to channel their findings and discoveries to broader audiences. CFR is the program development wing of Earthwatch that receives, reviews, and recommends research proposals for Earthwatch support. Earthwatch supports labor intensive research that spans many of the social sciences and humanities, including (but not limited to) cultural, economic, medical and physical anthropology, archaeology, architecture, ethnomusicology, textiles and costume, folklore and oral history, public health, sustainable development, agriculture, and alternative energy.

The Explorers Club offers a number of grants as part of its public service commitment. Applications are judged on the scientific and practical merits of the proposal, the competency of the applicant and the appropriateness of the budget. You do not have to be a member to apply.
The Exploration Fund for graduate students and young scientists provides grants in support of exploration and field research for those who are just beginning their research careers. Special grants for health-care related research and microbiology research are also available.
The Youth Activity Fund for high school students and college undergraduates was established to help foster a new generation of explorers and to build a reservoir of young men and women dedicated to the advancement of scientific knowledge of the world.
The Scott Pearlman Field Awards for Science and Exploration for professionals in media and the arts provides grants to support professional documentation of exploration and field research. Grants are made to artists, writers, filmmakers, photographers, and journalists.
The Redwood Creek Preservation Award grants up to $10,000 to U.S. citizen graduates of 21 years of age or older who are conducting research focused on preservation and conservation of the great American outdoors. This award was initiated by Explorers Club Corporate Partner Redwood Creek Wines of California.

Grants for Doctoral Students
A variety of the Foundation's grants support students enrolled in doctoral programs leading to a Ph.D. (or equivalent), including grants for dissertation research. There are also fellowship programs for doctoral students from countries where anthropology is underrepresented and where there are limited resources for educational training.
Grants for Post-Ph.D. Scholars : Grants are available to scholars with a doctorate include individual research grants, a limited number of writing fellowships, training for scholars from countries where academic training in anthropology is limited and awards to encourage collaborative research between international scholars.
Grants for Non-U.S. Scholars : All of the Foundation research grants are available to students and scholars regardless of nationality and place of residence. Alongside this, the Foundation has some specific programs to support students and scholars in countries where there are limited institutional and financial resources for anthropology.
Conferences and Workshops : Grants are available to bring international scholars together to develop anthropological knowledge and debate. Grants are made for amounts up to $15,000.
Historical Archives Program : This program helps preserve the history of anthropology by assisting senior scholars with archiving their personal research collections.

If you have access to the world wide web and are willing to fill in the online forms, this service promises a free customized list of financial aid sources. FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current.
