The Gloeckner Foundation awards grants for research and educational projects in floriculture and related fields (such as agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, entomology, plant breeding, plant pathology, and plant physiology related to floriculture) at universities, colleges and Federal research institutions in the United States. The proposed research and educational projects must be of substantial importance, and the results made available to the interested public. Each year KBS hosts several Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) interns.  This program, sponsored by NSF, provides a 12-week opportunity for students to conduct full-time research under the supervision of a resident or campus-based faculty.  The program provides a stipend and subsistence.  Students can elect to obtain 1-3 semester hour credit by enrolling in Zoology 494 Independent Study.  (Tuition expenses are the responsibility of the student).  We invite applications from highly motivated individuals and encourage applications from women and minorities.  You must be a U.S. citizen with undergraduate status to participate in the program.  Contact individual faculty as noted in application and other procedural details.

Michigan Agri-Business Association Educational Trust

For years, the Michigan Agri-Business Association Educational Trust has provided scholarships, primarily to students involved in the Ag Technology program at Michigan State University. Recently, the Trustees of the program decided to provide more support, and also focus on students directed toward four-year college degrees. The scholarship funds available each year are actually the interest received on the Educational Trust endowment, which is funded by proceeds from the annual Educational Trust Golf Outing, and other personal and corporate donations. In 1999 the Educational Trust awarded $18,000 in scholarships to deserving young people. These outstanding young men and women are great examples of the future of agriculture. . . and agri-business in Michigan. As a condition of accepting a MABA scholarship, these students agree to work for a MABA member during the summer months.

The purpose of the Arbor Day Mini Grant program is to highlight Arbor Day and the role that trees and forests play in our everyday lives. Grants of up to $200 may be requested for planting trees on public lands, hosting an Arbor Day celebration, or purchasing natural resource related library materials.
Local units of government (city, township, village), public educational institutions (K-12, college, university), public libraries, non-profit organizations, neighborhood organizations (501(c)3 or equivalent), churches, and tribes are eligible to apply. Applications must be received by November 16, 2007.
Fifty (50) grants will be awarded through a random selection process. All grants require matching funds equal to the awarded amount. Matching funds may include cash contributions or in-kind services, but may not include federal funds. Grant money will be paid upon project completion. Grant projects must be completed by June 30, 2008.

Rackham Endowment Fund

The Rackham Endowment Fund was established approximately 69 years ago, with the stipulation that the income from the fund be used to support research at MSU in agriculturally-related subjects. The fund is administered by a Rackham Foundation Board of Governors, whose philosophy is to provide seed funding for researchers so they may position themselves to seek and obtain external funding to continue and/or expand their research. The Rackham fund is in the third and final year of funding four research projects. A new three-year cycle of funding will be initiated on July 1, 2007 at a maximum funding level of $25,000 per project per year, for up to three years. Currently there are no restrictions on how this money is used for research, but the funding level has been established to include the cost of fringe benefits if it is used for an assistantship.

Michigan State University Sustainable Michigan Endowed Project (SMEP) has issued a request for proposals to support research toward a sustainable Michigan. This unique opportunity for funding research on sustainable Michigan projects is made possible by an endowment to MSU from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and support from the Office of the Provost. The grants are intended to decrease barriers to do integrative research addressing sustainability themes. Sustainability has numerous definitions, with most mentioning enhancing quality of life in Michigan and the health and integrity of ecosystems. The SMEP executive committee intends funds to be used to focus more research attention on sustainability issues as well as encouraging discourse about the complete issue of sustainability in Michigan, particularly its future. The scholarship program is open to high school seniors from across the U.S. Applications are not limited to FFA members. One-time awards of $1,500 will be made to 100 high school seniors who come from a farm family and plan to pursue a career in the field of agriculture. To qualify , a high school senior must have an above-average academic record, plan to enroll as a full-time student in an agriculture-related academic major in an accredited school, and be committed to pursuing a career in agriculture. Organic Farming Research Foundation

OFRF funds research into organic farming and food systems and dissemination of research results to organic farmers and to growers interested in making the transition to organic production systems. Projects should involve farmers in both design and execution and take place on working organic farms whenever possible and appropriate. OFRF may support innovative educational grants that reach or benefit a significant number of organic farmers and ranchers.
We encourage modest proposals. The average grant awarded in the past two cycles was around $8,000. OFRF will not fund a project for more than $15,000 per year. Matching funds from other sources and/or in-kind contributions from cooperators are encouraged but not required. OFRF will only fund one year of a multi-year project at a time. An interim report and new application are required for the Board to consider funding each subsequent year.
OFRF is particularly interested in supporting research that is not only relevant to, but takes place in, certified organic systems. OFRF does not normally fund studies that have, as a primary objective, comparisons of conventional with organic systems.

Perennial Plant Association

Grant funds are available from the Perennial Plant Association (PPA) to be used for research. Although our basic criterion for research proposals are in direct relationship to the herbaceous perennial industry, preference will be given to quality proposals for research on slow release fertilizers, height reduction by growth regulators, techniques to increase bud (eye) production, propagation techniques, and invasive species. Guidelines for the format of the proposal are included.
The grants are available to any recognized non-profit entity in the United States or Canada. No overhead will be paid to the institution on these grants. Although the researcher may wish to publish the results in a refereed journal first, the grant recipient is expected to make a written report of the findings to the PPA. The written report will be published, all or in part, in Perennial Plants, the PPA journal. When results are published elsewhere, mention must be made of support by the Perennial Plant Association.

The U.S. Community Forestry Research Fellowship Program provides fellowships to graduate students to support their field work in communities in the United States. The awards are up to $15,000 for dissertation fellows, up to $7,000 for masters fellows, and $2,000 for predissertation fellows. The program accepts proposals dealing with the broad array of issues and resources in community forestry, including, but not limited to, collaborative processes and conflict resolution, social networks, political ecology of forest communities, urban forestry issues, watershed restoration, park creation and management, forest labor issues, non-timber forest product production (floral greens, basket-making materials, wild mushrooms, maple syrup, etc.), and revitalization of local life-ways and cultures. Questions concerning issues of social justice and equity are especially welcome.
Eligibility: Students at any institution of higher learning may apply for a fellowship. The applicant must be enrolled in a degree-granting program in the social sciences, economics, environmental science, forestry, agriculture, or natural resource management, policy and planning at their home institution. Applicants must be engaged in research that deals directly with or is explicitly relevant to U.S. forest communities. Field work must be participatory; Fellows must work actively with members of the community in which they are conducting research to engage them in the research process.

FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current. This new database is the result of a collaboration between the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The database allows users to search for available grants in the biological and medical sciences. Users can narrow their grant search by specifying training level, type of application (individual or institution), or research area. More than 20 research areas are included in the database. Registration is required to use the database and to receive the email updates on new grants, but it is free. The Funding News and Articles section on the front page can be viewed without registering.
