Citizens Insurance Grants Program
Howell-based Citizens Insurance Company of America and Students Against Drunk Driving - Michigan are uniting to make financial support available to contributing SADD chapters in Michigan that have specialized program needs. Grants are available for $250, $500, or $1000 amounts to fund SADD programs and events. Grants will be awarded for January 3 through September 1 and may be used for activities designed to prevent underage alcohol, tobacco, and/or drug use while encouraging safe and healthy lifestyles. Other groups active in youth prevention areas such

Firefighters Charitable Foundation
The Firefighters Charitable Foundation is making 10 grants of $750 available to Michigan-based volunteer fire departments to be used to fund equipment, repairs and maintenance, training, or community-based outreach programs. "Volunteer firefighters are unsung heroes," said Lou Pelico, foundation president. "They provide life-saving services to communities that can't afford full-time paid fire departments and funding isn't always available for equipment, training, and outreach programs." Volunteer departments may send letters requesting grants to Firefighters Charitable Foundation, P. O. Box 2264, Boca Raton, FL 33427. Grants are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Funds to Help Fire Departments Secure Equipment

The mission of the GSK/Tums Grant-in-aid Program, administered by the First Responder Institute, is to assist fire departments-in-need secure essential equipment. To qualify, the applying organization must be a bona fide fire department with 501(c)(3) status, and show a legitimate need for the requested equipment and a documented inability to purchase requested equipment because of funding shortfalls. Applications will not be considered without matching funds that at least equal the amount requested. Applications may be submitted at any time but are reviewed quarterly, and the next review date is September 30, 2003.

Community-based nonprofit organizations in Wayne County will have the opportunity to upgrade security at their facilities to better protect against terrorist attacks. More than $500,000 will be available for the program in Wayne County and the City of Detroit. The grants are made available for community-based nonprofit organizations in the City of Detroit and Wayne County that can demonstrate measurable physical security improvements at their facilities. At least six grants will be awarded in Michigan, with a maximum award of $100,000 per organization. The National We Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization, assists police officers who are required to purchase their own body armor but cannot afford to do so. In 1991, the Law Enforcement Training Network started a monthly drawing on its satellite network to give away bullet resistant vests to police officers. Several vest companies assisted by donating one vest per month for the first three months. Within those three months, LETN received over 200 letters from officers requesting vests. A number of concerned citizens established the National We Care Foundation in 1992. Since that year, the foundation has awarded body armor to thousands of officers throughout the United States. Today, the foundation sees it's mission as providing new vests to law enforcement officers in need and educating them on the importance of body armor usage.

Police Officer and Fire Fighters Survivors Tuition Act

Public Act 195 of 1996, provides for the waiver of tuition at public community and junior colleges and state universities for the surviving spouse and children of Michigan police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. The program is intended to provide an educational benefit to the spouse and children of police officers and firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities and the citizens of Michigan.
Beginning with the academic year 1996/9, tuition will be waived for eligible survivors enrolled in classes leading to a certificate or undergraduate degree. Persons wishing to participate in this program must submit an application to the Department of State Police prior to the start of the academic year. The Act has specific eligibility requirements; therefore, potential applicants are encouraged to read this information carefully before applying.

Did you know the cost of training and equipping a firefighter is about $6,000, and protective clothing alone can cost $2,000? With such high costs, private sector funding is vital to keep firefighters' equipment up-to-date. One of the largest problems faced by America's volunteer and professional fire service is funding. Most volunteer departments serve small, rural communities and are quite often the only line of defense in those communities. Unfortunately, these departments are struggling to provide their members with adequate protective clothing and safety devices to protect their communities.
Applications for grants, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, may be obtained from the FRI Web site starting in January 2004. Departments can complete the grant form and file it electronically, and any U.S. fire department is eligible to submit a grant application. Every quarter, the FRI board of directors will review the applications and determine who will be funded. Building Grant Proposals and Coalitions: Finding Resources for Sustaining Emergency Service Organizations
Every day, thousands of individuals fight fires and deal with medical emergencies. These are the real heroes of today's society, and while the majority of these heroes volunteer their time and talents, their efforts usually go unnoticed. And, while they serve their community with a sense of civic responsibility and concern for the well being of others, they themselves often suffer because they lack the best possible tools for getting the job done. Whether those tools be adequate training or more effective equipment, many Emergency Service Organizations (ESOs) must scrape together meager donations in order to afford them.
