    International Bibliography of the Social Sciences

    Description and Notes:

    International Bibliography of Social Sciences, from the British Library of Political and Economic Science of the London School of Economics and Political Science, indexes the information contained in over 2,600 social sciences journals and 6,000 books each year. Coverage includes both core and specialized material from over 100 countries in more than 90 languages. Approximately 70% of the records are in English, and articles in other languages are displayed with both the original language title as well as with an English translation. The comprehensive coverage provided in the database, while based on the core disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science and sociology, also reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences.
    Note: There is only one port for both campus-wide and remote access use.

    International Political Science Abstracts (IPSA)

    Description and Notes:

    The most important of all the political science indexes, produced by the International Political Science Association. Indexes and abstracts articles from periodicals published throughout the world. The abstracts summarize the source articles. Articles in English are abstracted in English; those in other languages are abstracted in French, with all titles translated into English.

    PAIS International (including Archive)

    Description and Notes:

    The PAIS International database from CSA contains references to more than 553,300 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more. Newspapers and newsletters are not indexed. PAIS International includes publications from over 120 countries throughout the world. In addition to English, some of the indexed materials are published in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
    MSU faculty and staff also have access to the PAIS Archive database through this link. The PAIS Archive comprises a retrospective conversion of the PAIS Annual Cumulated Bulletin, Volumes 1-62, published 1915-1976, containing over 1 million records of additional resources.

    Worldwide Political Science Abstracts via CSA

    Description and Notes:

    Worldwide Political Science Abstracts is building on the merged backfiles of Political Science Abstracts, published by IFI / Plenum, 1975-2000, and ABC POL SCI, published by ABC-CLIO, 1984-2000. The database provides citations, abstracts, and indexing of the international serials literature in political science and its complementary fields, including international relations, law, and public administration / policy. The serials list of the new database, which currently contains 1,304 titles, is actively under construction, with a focus on expanding international coverage.

    Facts on International Relations and Security Trends (FIRST) is a free-of-charge service for politicians, journalists, researchers and the interested public. FIRST is a joint project of the International Relations and Security Network (ISN) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The integrated database system contains clearly documented information from research institutes around the world. It covers areas in the field of international relations and security, such as hard facts on armed conflicts and peace keeping, arms production and trade, military expenditure, armed forces and conventional weapons holding, nuclear weapons, chronology, statistics and other reference data.

    The PARLINE database (a derivative of Parliaments on-Line) has been developed by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and is regularly updated on the basis of official information provided by national Parliaments. Whenever other sources of information are used, as is the case with preliminary results of parliamentary elections in some countries before comprehensive official results are made public, these alternative sources are indicated accordingly. For all countries where a national legislature exists, the database provides:

  • General information on each of the Parliament's chambers
  • Description of the electoral system
  • Results of the most recent elections
  • Information on the presidency of each Chamber
  • Information on the mandate and status of members of Parliament.

    ParLit Database

    PARLIT (a derivative of Parliaments and Literature) is a unique database of bibliographic references on the role, structure and working methods of national parliaments, and on electoral systems, constitutional law, history and political science. PARLIT is regularly updated by the Inter-Parliamentary Union for the benefit of those who search for references on books and articles dealing with parliamentary law and legislative elections throughout the world. The database currently includes references to over 7,000 books and studies as well as 30,000 articles taken from 160 periodicals used as information sources. Although the complete database contains references to publications since 1965, for technical reasons, on-line access is currently limited to data since 1992 only. We are working to remedy the situation.

    FindArticles is an archive of published articles that can you can search and print in their entirety, at no cost. Over 300 magazines and journals are covered, back to 1998. The coverage is updated constantly. FindArticles is a content-distribution partnership between LookSmart and Gale Group. You can view the articles by subject (nine subject areas, subdivided by topics), and view publications by name and search by terms of your choosing. Search results display the article title and a brief abstract, with a link to the full article with the date and author listed. Or you can type in a term and search the entire database. There is a useful Help tutorial.

    The Digital National Security Archive contains the most comprehensive collection of primary documents available. The database includes more than 63,000 of the most important declassified documents regarding critical U.S. policy decisions. There are 29 complete collections, each offering specialized insights. Integrated, they allow you to explore policy across several different areas at once.

    Dissertations and Theses @ CIC Institutions

    This UMI/ProQuest site provides access to CIC Institution (Big Ten plus University of Chicago) dissertations and theses; from 1997 onward, full text is available. Citations and abstracts are available for earlier documents.

    A 24-page preview of each document from 1997+ is available for immediate viewing, but to obtain the full text of a dissertation or thesis from 1997+, it is necessary to fill out a form at the site. There is no charge for documents submitted by MSU. A PIN will be e-mailed to the requestor. The PDF must then be retrieved from the site specified in the e-mail, where it will be available for pickup for a 24-hour period. Other delivery formats (printed copies) are also available for various fees as indicated at the site.

    Covers legislative and judiciary materials, presidential publications, committee and commission reports, and documents of independent and regulatory agencies. At present, there are records for almost 400,000 different publications issued since July 1976.

    Proquest Dissertations & Theses (Formerly called Dissertation Abstracts)

    Description and Notes:

    The database includes bibliographic citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester. Citations for dissertations published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. The full text of more than one million of these titles is available in paper and microform formats. Institutional subscribers to ProQuest Digital Dissertations receive on-line access to the complete file of dissertations in digital format starting with titles published from 1997 forward.

    Description and Notes:

    Catalogue of United Nations(UN) documents and publications indexed by the UN Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the UN Office at Geneva. Also included are commercial publications and other non-UN sources held in the collection of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library. UNBISnet also provides instant access to a growing number of full text resources in the six official languages of the UN (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish), including resolutions adopted by the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Security Council from 1946 onward.
    Note: The MSU Main Library has an excellent collection of UN materials to aid your research. In addition, many of the non-UN publications which appear in this catalog can be located by searching our online catalog or requesting them through interlibrary loan.
