Opposing Viewpoint Series

The Opposing Viewpoints series by Greenhaven Press provides an excellent starting point for undergraduates who wish to examine current hot topics affecting American society. By exploring the many sides of a debate as related by experts, readers can become more aware of the issues involved as well as develop critical thinking skills.

Each book also contains a bibliography of periodical articles and books and a directory of organizations to contact for more information on the topic addressed.

Following is an annotated list of titles in this series that have been ordered by the MSU Libraries. For more information about current locations, call numbers, and availability, see MAGIC, our online catalog.

Many of the articles appearing in this series are also available electronically via the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Access to the electronic articles is limited to MSU faculty and students.

The prominent role religion has played in history and in individual lives has give rise to countless and relevant questions which social scientists, philosophers and theologians have been debating for centuries. What is the origin of humankind's religious "instinct"? How did the concept of God originate? Why does evil exist in a world created by a benevolent God? These and others are questions which can never be answered with certainty. In the final analysis, religious belief depends upon faith and faith, as St. Augustine wrote, "is to believe ... what we do not see." Yet the debate continues, a fact which, perhaps more than any others, underlines the significance of religion in all our lives.
